What killed tablets and compact phones was that they were either too underspecced, or too expensive, nothing decent at an affordable price. Until recently Samsung and Lenovo kept releasing $250-300, 8-10" tablets with just 800p resolution and 16GB internal storage.
I had used Blackberry Playbook almost for 5 years. Unfortunately it's dead now & I am still missing it & need some better alternative. It's a perfect portable media player with audio & video files stored, for long journey. It's not possible to carry laptop everywhere & these phones are too small for portable media players.
my mother uses a tablet, but literally no one else. its kinda like a second phone, cause it's definitely not a laptop. windows laptop/tablet are the best option for anybody interested in the tablet form, but then they lack the OS to really make use of it. i think OS and capability is the problem.`
People who bought iPad use them still everyday. People who bought Android tablet stopped using them years ago.
I don't think tablets been relevant ever, there's only iPad market and it's still doing very well. IPads and apps are getting better and better. Sametime Android companies gave up a long time ago already.
Google tablet seems interesting, except the desktop cpu.
Not good for battery
With the foldable phones on the horizon, tablets with screen size of 8 inch or less will become less relevant IMO. And if the price of these foldable phones comes down then we'll have to see how many people will still prefer the 'old school' standalone tablets.
As for the tablets with screen size above 10 inches, I think they should have desktop like experience, say Surface for example, rather than being a blown-up mobile device unless you intend to use it just for media consumption.
I miss my Nexus 7
Phones are not even smaller than tablets anymore...
The last Oracle, 24 Mar 2019I wish Tablet makers would use SoCs as powerful as the Apple A12x and stronger. Also 10 inches... moreForget it. If the bare minimum performance needed for those tasks requires a 130+W laptop, it can't fit in a tablet. Or the tablet will be quite thick and have a fan. And will be very heavy.
I think tablet computers were only a stepping stone for traditional laptop computers evolving into the more multi-purpose, portable and still powerful 2-in-1 computers. You can call them a tablet with a keyboard or an ultra portable laptop
Back then, laptops didn't have touchscreen but now they do; and tablets didn't have keyboards or mouse but now they do. So it's really thanks to tablets that we've been able to develop a truly all-in-one computer perfect for both productivity and consumption
And of course, there are always the odder type of people out there still carrying an aging 5-inch phone and a trusty 7-inch tablet because that's just what they need or prefer
I have a HP Elite x2 1011 G1 and I love it. The fact that is Windows allows full compatibility with my work's apps and since its detachable and not 2-in-1, its useful to watch things in bed or to read on the subway.
The keyboard also has battery so I can go a full day (light use) of work without an issue.
The problem with tablets is that they are trying to make them thinner and lightweight and (like cellphones) people want more runtime, at least myself can handle 2 cm more if that means i got incredible battery life.
Thank God, I can afford two PCs for my desk, a tablet and a phone.
Each one of them has a specific use. Most of the time I use my "net PC" built for internet and light tasks (an old E6750,4GB RAM, SSD disc), but when I sit on the couch, I prefer to have my tablet (Xiaomi Mi pad 4) next to me. I rarely use my phone (LG G6) when at home.
Truth to be told, if a couldn't afford all those devices, I'd probably have only a large screen handset. But since all of them are relatively cheap, I prefer to have each for a specific purpose.
I wish Tablet makers would use SoCs as powerful as the Apple A12x and stronger. Also 10 inches seems like the perfect size. Tablet makers need to make specs to replace to replace the top end photo and video editing laptops (16-32Gb RAM and some superb graphics performance too).
tablets are to close to phones in their OS and features, even design to a point, there is very little you can do extra on a standard tablet that you cant do on a large phone, yes there are the so called ipad pros, which is just an excuse to charge obscene amounts for an ipad with slimmer bezels and 2nd gen pen support, oh an it has 1 desktop class app on the way in photoshop, i want an ipad type device running a full blown OS capable of installing desktop class programs onto it, and no surface isnt there yet, but its getting closer, i can see the use of a smaller tablet, say around the 9" if it has virtually no bezels, making it the size of an 8" would be great, apple missed the boat on redesigning the ipad mini 5, keep milking that stale old cash cow
I just want a good full HD tablet for media consumption .... I don't need those super expensive high res tablets ... It's not that tablet are irrelevant, it's just that you don't need to buy a new one every year or every couple of years. Give me a 12" full HD android tablet with a good screen, good battery life, a kickstand, and I'll buy it in a second. I have a windows 10 tablet, but battery life isn't that great compare to ipad or android tablet (especially in standby time). My dream is a full HD Surface form factor android tablet.
Anonymous, 24 Mar 2019How people chose iOS tablet over Windows? We are shorting of Cerebrum in very near future.. Ev... moreI think that apple tablets are great for kids. They are simple, easy to use and have a lot of stuff available.
Pretty often even I like to read something on internet and for that I don't need much more expensive windows tablet or laptop.
Also what's very important for me is customer service. I don't know about many other countries but in North America Apple have one of the best services. This is the reason I'm not even looking at Chinese stuff at the moment.
AnonD-558092, 24 Mar 2019What a coincidence! I have the Tab A 8.0! I also use it for what you enumerated. And it's doin... moreLol you have my tab little brother, but mine still working :)
(I'm writing with it right now)
Still using my Samsung tab II from 6 years ago. It's running on Lineage OS, had it's battery replaced a couple years ago and it's still good enough for streaming and ebooks so I don't exactly care about upgrading. Buuut, the battery started giving up on me again and the new iPad mini that just came out did have me interested. (I don't buy into Apple or iOS, but I was enticed nonetheless.)
Anyways, I find myself just using my phone most of the times, so I guess I somewhat care about tablets, but not much though.
iPad 9.7 (2017) user here. Its my Casual browsing, Youtube and a Bedtime TV all rolled into one. My wife loves the convenience of it,i love the refined os. Yes its no way a full fledged laptop, but 95% of our tasks are not intense, so the iPad is sufficient and also the phones are way too small for a full blown entertainment device
