I'm talking electronics and entertainment in general: headphones, Hi Fis, game consoles, cameras, videocameras, TVs, movies, music, I can go on. If you think Sony's wellbeing rests on phones you're delusional. Plus, Sony has innovated A LOT in the past (Walkman, Trinitron, etc). What have Chinese companies done? Obsess over bezels and copy Apple's design language in everything, from phone design to even website presentation.

Well.. sure sony is the elephant. And xiaomi, oppo, vivo are the ants/mice. We can see the ants/muce can innovate and also can sell much more phones compared to sony.

Personally I understand foldable phones and what they're trying to achieve, but it's too early for me to buy one. The crease in the middle of the display ruins everything and makes me say NO, take it away!
The device doesn't seem to have any problems right there, despite the fact that this is a prototype that you're seeing. While that is nothing short of impressive, the main concern here is whether it'll be as expensive as those done by other brands, such as SAMSUNG and HUAWEI. Now don't get me wrong, foldable smartphones are a great concept, no doubt, but the fact that they're costing as much as something let's say a gaming laptop (looking at u Apple) just makes it not worth the money and hence it's insignificant to most people out there as of now. Hopefully this comes in cheap to be honest
The screen are not phablet, the 6.2 inch foldable phone feels much smaller than the iPhone 6 plus. Should put at least one 6.5 inch foldable clamshell phone.
Predictive memorys, 12 Apr 2019And the reason why they wait is.. because they are so p00r. They dont have enough money to imp... morethey posted an operating PROFIT of 1 billion USD last year, they may not be as big as others, but not poor by far. iPear makes 10 or 20 times that in profit, what amazing innovation have they brought? X and XS are the same phone with a slightly better processor which is underutilized anyway.
When people will see folding phones, at least this first few implementations do not add any benefit, and are only bulkier, and possibly more fragile devices, this might not even become a trend. I'd take Xperia 1 over any of these experiments any day

Anonymous, 11 Apr 2019"i haven't seen any news about sony's foldable. they are late again as usual? or they are plan... moreFolding phones, as of right now, while being technological marvels and the engineering that went in them is amazing, are completely impractical. Take Samsung's device as an example - when folded, the screen is too small by today's standards - when unfolded, it's not really a "tablet in your pocket", it's just another under6.5 inch screen. Sony's doing the right thing, as it's always been doing with trends - wait for the trend to play itself out and see if it's ACTUALLY any useful.
I don't understand the phones that folds on the screen on the outside, where even folded, it is still a phablet sized screen. If operating the device requires two hands, even when folded, they might as well fold the screen on the inside, but only intend active use of the device when unfolded, to protect the screen and make it easier to fit in the pocket.
So this solution makes sense. The Xiaomi and Huawei offerings don't.
But I think for any folding-on-the-inside-device, an outer display makes it all the more practical, the One-hand-full-usage of the Galaxy fold for situations where both hands can't be used, or on a device like this, for quick tasks like music playback, see incoming notifications and see who is calling, and a few toggles. But still even without the outer display, it still makes more sense than the offerings from Huawei and Xiaomi, as it offers a more pocketable size when folded compared to unfolded (depending of course of the size of pockets), and offers protection of the display when folded.
There is also the wrap around wrist folding, that makes sense, not as a device that can unfold and become a typical phone-slab, but as a solution to have a bigger "smart-watch" display, without the device becoming too large for the arm.
Nice, for a compacter solution, that one can fit in a pocket. The flaw I see is that there is no outer display, a small one that would offer music playback controls, see who is calling, see a short summery of the notification, switching sound profiles and such, it is pointless if one has to open the phone for every action that doesn't really require the full screen experience.
(personally I would add wifi and data toggles, as I turn those of to save battery, and I usually don't need to be constantly connected to the web, as I'm not really using messaging services, but I do turn them on at times, just the let the phone sync and see if there are new mails, and such, and then I would not need a full screen experience, if it turns out there is nothing new coming in)
I do however think that galaxy fold design, is smarter in general, an outer one-hand operation display, and inner unfolding two hand experience. Like having both a phone that one can use standing on the busy commute, or typing while walking, but also have the bigger screen experience of a compact tablet when two hand operation is applicable.

Or maybe they are just waiting and see if there's any real use for such a product? I mean seriously, are you going to buy these foldable devices which we have seen so far?
I don't think they solve anything, companies are just doing these because it's possible. Folding your device just gives your one extra step to use your device and when you do that 100 times a day, well it doesn't sound that good.
