Unless your settings are set to location India, where ads are used to subsidize the phone, you should be perfectly able to disable the ads.
Example in folders, open folder, click on the name and remove "promoted apps".
I found two more guides:
Disable ads from Mi Browser. Open the Browser app, click on the menu button on the bottom right corner, go to Settings > Privacy & Security and disable “Recommended for you.”
To get rid of ads from MIUI Security app, follow these steps:
Open the MIUI Security app.
Tap Settings icon on the top-right.
Scroll down and disable Receive recommendations.
I didn't have to do this, but then again i rejected ads during first time setup.

And yes I know what Im talking about, running a mix 3 and have 2 people running mi9 around me ;) Since the ads are only in settings menu I dont really care, but they need to claim it on the box, its misleading.
About time. It's nice to see they are continuing to bring MIUI closer to Stock Android.
someone, 17 Jun 2019Doesn't matter what fanboy I am. I am just stating the facts. I being samsung fanboy or iphone... moreDid you know when you buy and android phone and boot it up the first time they ask you some questions such as being allowed to track your every move and user experience feedback programme etc?
Well, on a Xiaomi phone you also get a question about ads, and you can select no. So zero ads is very easy to obtain. But let's say you were in a rush and only clicked "OK" and "agree" to everything in startup, you can still disable it very easily in the settings menu.
So please, stop crying about something you know nothing about.
someone, 17 Jun 2019Its useless whatever is coming until they have stupid ads built in to their OS. Stupid phone companyLol, amateur, turn off the ads. Every day people are crying over these ads. Just turn them off ffs

Stupid phone companyYou have option to turn it off, not only in security, file manager, theme, downloads, music... But also in phone settings, msa, all it takes is like 30 seconds to turn off recommandations, and that it. If you have problem with India region, change it.

Some of the main complaints about Oneplus in China are lack of software features. Miui is far more popular. Software is down to personal preference and different markets have different preferences
