WP7 actually ended 2011 with 1.4% global market share, 30% market share loss compared to their Q4 2010... I don't know where you're getting this "chipping away" but currently as it stands, Android makes up for HALF of all the smartphone in the world, beating iOS, Symbian, Blackberry, and WP7.

Nobody buys these low end ,free on contract phones.
if Microsoft wants popularity they need to push out some high end devices , ones that people gonna say oooh ahhh I want that.
