TheArtist, 14 Aug 2019Too bad we don't have a better option than G Maps nowadays..Wrong, i use Here WeGo and Offline Maps & Navigation from ( Maps, GPS Navigation ( developer ) on PlayStore.
These are amazing apps alternatives to GMaps. Don't let Google know even more than they already know about you... Laways use safe alternatives... There are plenty of them . Cheers
Anonymous, 15 Aug 2019That's what I'm saying, gmaps is good for general purpose, but for the "off the beaten track" ... morePlease don't feel discouraged and try harder to keep making those corrections and additions!

I use to use here maps when it was on my nokia 5800 to track possible run routes across fields, bridal paths, canal paths etc....I use to send in the map corrections to Google to improve their local maps of my area and London but they never accepted one, even though map corrections was a thing and I'd physically walked or ran each route...that's when I started looking elsewhere for maps in my android device, ones that track route, go tag locations of interest , etc
Anonymous, 14 Aug 2019unless you're an idiot you should already know there are several map services out there alread... moreI use maps.me app from google store for anything everything and all.

Note7 owner, 14 Aug 2019Yeah good idea, now the PLA can follow you around and make you disappear. So does CIA from the US.
[deleted post]If you had brains you'd realise you can use other map services other than Google maps, so it's not really a monopoly....you're just prejudice against America

China is looking at world dominance. My country (grew up on the northwest side of chicago) is too. Who is going to win?

Gmaps its the only who ask for Identity and Contacts permission .....
ProJames-CHM, 14 Aug 2019If it relies on telephone stations, it isn't offline is it?
Unless you meant positioning. T... moreIf you are running and your "good dedicated sports watch" lose the signal due to trees, buildings, etc. A good one have the feature of calculate through its extra sensors like the accelerometer and gyroscope your route and distance until you recover the GPS signal and then adjust an recalculate the distance, time stimated, etc, from that point maintainining the route calculated while you where out of signal.
Airplanes do it in another way using the pitot tube, Inertial Reference Systems (IRS) and other sensors when the gps its lost, and, of course, using mainly its backup radio system, the Radio Aids (VORs, DMEs, ADFs, ILSs), that in fact is old main one and still vital as a backup and complement of the GPS used all the time too.
In the same way you can do something like that to improve your phone navigation if you have enough stations around. So you are using your GPS and making adjust when needed, triangulating your position between the base station antennas, at least three of them. And even calculating your route when the GPS signal is not available.
Anonymous, 14 Aug 2019Watch out! Huawei might lead you off a cliff!!Yeah , Apple will be Huawei's first victim ! ;)))
sadh, 14 Aug 2019Too bad Nokia is giving up with Here. It's really great service, first with offline navigation... moreI thought Here was bought out by BMW/VW companies, no?
It was my favourite map app when G Drive/Map was rubbish.
Now I'm all in with G Map ... unless something better comes along.
Sam, 14 Aug 2019Garmin and others disagree with you, they won't share their maps. And less the high precission... moreIf it relies on telephone stations, it isn't offline is it?
Unless you meant positioning. This is already achieved through A-GPS.
With their technological progress and drive I reckon soon we'll see see a real war with google for a customer.
