And just so you know, the Xperia 1's 21:9 display could be utilized to watch most of the movies in the industry in their native aspect ratio, and even if multimedia isn't your primary concern, the added space of the taller ratio allows for more contents to be fitted in in a single scroll of page.
If that's not enough to say that they could make great smartphones, I don't know what else is.
If pale colors and obnoxious screen cutouts are your thing, then I can't argue with that, but you certainly lack the sense of professionality.

Anonymous, 18 Nov 2019I guess Xperia phones are only essential to sony because of their camera module.With or without xperia, camera business would keep working same way.
Cellphones are important to later implement 5G tech to other stuff.

Anonymous, 18 Nov 2019How do you know that it's not quad bayer?Months ago (late november 2018) one sensor called imx666 (66.6 MP total, 50MP 1:1, 48MP 4:3, 36MP 21:9) was posted on wikipedia page of Exmor sensors.
It had as specs 1/1.7" , DRAM inside , 21:9 mode and announcement date of april/19.
But before MWC2019, it was removed from wikipedia.

Someone on weibo confirmed it was real, but still prototype and 1/1.5" instead.
At MWC Sony was asked why the devices did not have imx586. They said they saw no advantage over native 12MP. They could used if they wanted to, but had no interest.

At least Sony was onto something with their taller displays. I scoffed at them at first. The revival of flip phones will make them more popular.

What i want, exellent battery with super fast charging, exellent multimedia capabilities including at least 4k 120hz refresh rate and loud high quality sound. Ditch the 3.5 mm jack or even the memory slot. Any design is appreciated as long as no notch or pop up mechanisms, even a dual screen is ok.

In smartphone it should be also camera where resolution matters, would be different if it was tablet, 4K tablet would be great, no move from Sony though.

And don't tell me the Xperia 5 is compact, i've seen one in the flesh and compared it to my beloved XZ1C. No way i would buy that phone.
Next year Apple will release a sequel to their SE line, a new SE2. They will sell tens of millions of them, just because some users just want a true compact phone; small and light in the pocket, just enough for call and text and some other things; not a tablet wanabee. But good build quality and premium feel.

XZ Premium, XZ2 Compact, XZ2 Premium, XZ3, Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 are all better than any Z gen phone. Zs had more propitiatory software such as calendar, messaging from Sony which I really like.
Btw this rumor makes no sense. Sony did indeed cooperate with Light that helped Nokia with 9 PureView so quad cam or penta cam (fifth being ToF) are possibility but 8 cameras? Forget it. If you are dreaming about image stacking like Nokia 9 or XZ2 Premium It would need a dedicated chip a la Aube to process that as Android chipsets are not good enough for such task, hence why Nokia 9 is slow when you release the shutter.
