Now that's a lot of money just for R&D.
Wow, just wow, what a waste.
And yet they totally utterly screwed up with the final result, in direct contrast to Moto who got it right first time though more imaginative engineering design.
Samsung are great at technology components, but their industrial design is flaws. I have a Note 9, probably the best phone they ever made, but even it has one flaw that was baked in years ago with the Galaxy S6 for style over substance purposes: A curved display, wasting space and making it harder to use the S-Pen on a full size canvas.
The flaws in the fold, beyond reliability are:
Lack of S-Pen - all that space, no doodles?
Half baked front display. Again, Moto kept it simples with the RAZR 2019 mini display
Clunky hinge mechanism
Obvious wrinkle in centre of screen - should have waited until Gen 2 prototype, not released the thing. Refunds and repairs are going to cost Samsung dear, should have learned from Note 7 that rushing a product to market can be costly to everyone.
