Anonymous, 15 Jan 2020Thickness doesn't change hardness. A 1cm thick diamond is just as hard as a 1mm thick diamond. So ultra thin glass will have a quality of GG3 or something???

The only way to increase the bend radius is to 'bubble out' the screen around the center of the hinge. This much was obvious to this layman before any of the inward folding mechanisms were made public. That Samsung hadn't gone that route was surprising, especially after reports of creasing started to come out.

The mechanical design achieving this can be protected, but the idea itself cannot. Samsung will either come up with a different mechanism to accomplish the same thing, or they will copy Moto's and be sued. This is how the patent system is supposed to work.

Even if its scratch resistant, most likely it will still be vulnerable to damage from gaming. Imagine someone playing a fighting game or a racing game like Asphalt for 1 hour a day, how long do you think it will resist?

Inspite of the call back of the fold series and releasing it again, Samsung manage to sell a million units which is fantastic considering the price it was available at.

So fold 2 should be a success as well.

Shadocx, 12 Dec 2019I don't think it's bendable glass, because glass breaks regardless of how thin it is, maybe th... moreOrdinary glass breaks when bent because it's not very elastic and it is really bad about surface defects opening into cracks. The defects problem was solved a very long time ago. You use heat or chemical treatment so that the outside layer of the glass is being compressed while the inside layer is being stretched. The compression prevents surface defects from opening up into cracks. (And now it bursts apart if you cut into the stretched center) Stretching from bending can be solved by making the glass extremely thin. Essentially the length inside and outside of the bend change less as the glass becomes thinner. It can be glued to plastic to provide it with scratch resistance. Last time I checked, UTG was ALMOST thin enough for foldable phones.

"The UTG screen is hard to produce and quite expensive at the moment, although rumors suggest that the phone will cost less than the original Fold. It could probably compete with Motorola's Razr 2019."

The last lines of the article aren't correct.
The upcoming fold device from Samsung in Feb is expected to be cheaper than the original fold and will compete with Moto Razr not the Successor of Fold 2 which will be supposed to have this UTG screen.

When they say it would cost less than the original fold, doesn't that mean they'd use older hardware with the UTG as the only upgrade? Makes you wonder

Or it's a mix of glass and plastic, so shouldn't be called glass anymore, then it's probably less scratch resistance than glass, but resistant enough to not get scratched by fingernails, razor blades etc.
You guys correct if I'm wrong.
