Marco M, 19 Dec 2019Another one uncapable of using google? The patent is easy to find, but I'm tired of googlin... moreAt no point did I write apple doesn't have a patent. I need proof Samsung is not developing a full screen phone because of Apple's patent. That is what I wrote. In fact, I already know Samsung can make a full screen phone because the Galaxy Fold has a full screen just like the iPhone. It even resembles the iphone when you fold it out. Neither has a "bezel" the way other phones do. They have a rim around the screen with a cutout bezel. The rim on the iphone 11 is about 1/16ths of an inch. The rim on the Fold is barely over that. Yes, I measured them both. There is no difference.

But I'll put that point to the side. Since you assume I cannot use google, I have to call you out for missing apple's edge-to-edge display patent granted in 2017. It's a curved panel patent that mimics what Samsung has been doing since 2014. So apple figured out a way to get around Samsung's edge-to-edge curved display and Xiaomi figured out a way to get around apple's curved bottom display but Samsung has their hands tied trying to get around apple's curved bottom display? I don't buy that.

The patent is easy to find, but I'm tired of googling on behalf of others. It really should not be necessary in 2019.

Foldable displays, and curved displays have many solutions and patents. There are patents for this and that and every scenario each player can think of. But apple's patent has served them well. At least until the display manufacturers made a slight change to the panel connector ribbon and Samsung, and other display manufacturers did find another way I believe. Either that or they are now paying license fee to apple. Cross licensing is also common.

There are phones already with slimmer chin than iphones, it's just that they have even slimmer sides and top, giving the appearance of chin. Iphones have very thick thick bezels all around. My phone with a thick thrid party case looks like an iphone with regards to bezels, so I avoid that and use the much slimmer original case for a much better look.

Anonymous, 19 Dec 2019Not true and besides Note 10+ chin is smaller than iPhone bezels around the screen. It is still true, it's just that Samsung has found another way round this patent. . . This does typically happens eventually.

Many phones have had bottom bezel similar to iphone, it's just that they also have much slimmer side bezels giving the appearance of chin. Iphone on the other hand has thick bezels all around. Which to me makes it look like a toy version of a phone.

Marco M, 18 Dec 2019Because apple holds a patent (on a technology they don't make themselves) on folding the OLED ... moreWithout proof I'm still not buying the patent argument. Samsung has already been making curved screens (to the dismay of everyone) and foldable screens for years now. They make screens for Apple. I find it hard to believe they curved the sides but never thought to curve the bottom. They have much more history with curved screens than Xiaomi. Remember, bezel-less never actually meant no bezels. If you look at early bezel-less phones, it meant no bezels on the sides.

I believe they don't think it is worth it. What advantage does apple's full screen have over a screen with minimal bezels except looks? We're talking millimeters at this point.

Anonymous, 17 Dec 2019Why Android OEM’s can’t remove the whole chin and whole forehead since now android supports ge... moreBecause apple holds a patent (on a technology they don't make themselves) on folding the OLED panel back on itself to reduce space needed at the bottom for the display connector. Not that this helps their phones much, they still have a thick bezels all around.

Xiaomi found a way around this patent with their mi mix alpha, and had the connector at the back bezel.

I'd rather have some bezel rather than thin bezel display but with stupid notch or punch hole.

s10e is a good size, I even really like the a3 my brother has, it's even smaller. It's such a pity that the s11e looks to be going even bigger. There's definitely a market for smaller phones, so strange they dont realise it

A few times I've gone into stores, and almost dropped the things. The shop assistants gasped, nearly as much as I did. Held several devices before release (stores round me are good like that) and no joke, several times they have almost fallen straight through my hands. Ergonomics of curved screens are just wrong.
