The gap between a 10 mega... moreNewer Mate 30 Pro shows its image quality at 52mm equivalent focal length (where it relies on super resolution stacking + centre cropping) is on par with or sometimes even better than other phones with a dedicated 2x telephoto lens though, so your argument is invalid.

You don't understand how Quad Bayers work.
Neither do you have any idea of how modern smartphones with software are able to make Quad Bayers work better than traditional sensors for zoom and other purposes.

Samsung's 5x can have a different field of view than Huawei's 5x. Furthermore, according to rumors, Samsung will use a Quad Bayer sensor. Currently, 48 megapixel Quad Bayer sensors capture much less detail than 48 megapixel Bayer sensors and also produce ugly demosaicing artifacts, which also produce additional noise. It would be more comparable to a 16 megapixel Bayer sensor + artifacts.
A super resolution algorithm could help a little bit, but currently the Honor View 20 (and other Honor phones) might be the only phone that combines a super resolution algorithm with a Quad Bayer sensor ("Ultra Clarity mode") and even then the results were not as good as a 48 megapixel Bayer sensor.

I think that Huawei should have added a high resolution 50mm camera. The gap between a 10 megapixel (or 16 megapixel) ≈25mm camera and an 8 megapixel 240mm camera is too big and Quad Bayer sensors are currently awful for crops. At 52mm the P30 Pro is much worse than 52mm Bayer cameras.

Huawei made some of the best looking phones. Now they are copying ugly design from other manufacturers.

The equivalent focal length is relsted to size of sensor, so that's 5x for the whole 48MP sensor. But if you cut the picture to 1/4, the focal length doubles. To know more you can search 'equivalent focal length'. So we can say S20 Ultra has a 5x 48MP telescope or a 10x 12MP
At this point when the s20 ultra and p40 pro zoom to 100× the s20 ultra will have higher resolution compared to 8mp 10× optical zoom on the p40 pro. Also 40mp selfie cam sensor size in Samsung is 0.7 that's the smallest in history huawei has no chance

Anonymous, 17 Jan 2020Periscope of p30 pro has 8MP 1/4" with f3.4. It is 8mm2. This one will be behind f4.0 Wrong. The P30 Pro has an 8 megapixel 12mm² sensor for the 125mm field of view. At 5x the P30 Pro crops the sensor in order to achieve a 135mm field of view and still uses a 10mm² area.

if it has 10x optical so the 5th camera will be another 2x or 3x optical to fill the gap between the 1x and 9.9x also for portrait.
