Cropping does NOT result in the same thing as optical zoom. Unlike, say, an hybrid car who uses electricity and fossil fuels to put the vehicle in motion without any difference in the result. A cropped picture will be visibly worse than an optically zoomed picture.

The Last Oracle, 20 Jan 2020I am guessing the 10x will be optical and the 10x on top of that (100x in total), will be smar... moreIt would still look like crap at the end of the zoom range since no interpolation or super resolution algorithms are good enough to make up for details lost at 10x digital zoom, so it's not really a good idea to write "100x" on the camera housing no matter how it's done. And this can be said to P40 Pro as well, 10x zoom is quite useless if there isn't any intermediate telephoto lens to fill the gap between the 10x telephoto camera and the main camera.

In that sense they did the right thing So you think writing "100x" just for the sake of attracting customers is a commendable behaviour as a company? Even companies like Huawei or Xiaomi were sensible enough not to do such a thing in the past. I'm sure Samsung isn't that dumb and will put some other words instead (e.g. 5x or 10x), but if they actually did I would be seriously disappointed.

My Chrome really just logged me out. I will reinstate what I said a few comments down 'anonymously'. It's tacky and misleading to put 100x when it'll look woeful. It's really only 10x.
