I'm pretty sure not a lot of people are hating Xperias based only on the display. I think other concerns about them are the source of their criticism. They just find 4K on a phone to be over the top. If only they made a new tablet with 4K display, everyone would praise them as ot would be more relevant.
But tablets aren't really a hot market, plus you don't want to cannibalize your 4K TV sales, don't you?

Perhaps that's their way of refusing how that company is ahead of making the best smartphone displays.

The image quality is awful. OMG this is really bad. Details are lacking, there's noticeable noise in all scenes, rolling shutter is huge and it looks like the bitrate is inadequate for 8K.
Just awful.
Admittedly, the IMX586 isn't the most appropriate for this demonstration, which serves to illustrate how high MP count means nothing about quality and that sensor size is more important.
