Anonymous, 09 Feb 2020iOS runs very smoothly even on older devices, and 3GB-4GB of RAM is good enough for most users.Android phones also run smoothly on older devices with 3-4gb ram.
And does more than latest iOS while not throttling down CPU or battery performance.

That is how effed up the Open Handset Alliance is. Google okayed it to push all responsibility away from their own accounts. Network operators said, "thank you", and abuses it to force you to buy a new phone after two years.

Their unlocked phones are the worst. The Android 9 release for unlocked US had ZERO updates for some carriers until you swapped the SIM card, then it went to every 3 months. The new Android 10 release and its security patches are, again, blocked according to Samsung.

My other brands of unlocked phones were updated by the manufacturer without these games. Either Samsung is lying or their updates are so screwed up that carriers really do need to block them.

Luxor, 07 Feb 2020Is that where you thought updates came from? Network provider...LOL!!!!!!Educate yourself on the Open Handset Alliance.
Google provides the basic Android files as open source. Manufacturers has to manually compile that code to work on each device like it's 1995. When they're done they send rust code to each network operator, who normally just lets it collect dust on a fille server.
This is why Android updates are fragmented. This is why you're not getting every security update even on a fancy new 1,000 buck device. This is why all Android updates are delayed by months or years. This is why Google has to be forked out of the equation.

Microsoft has the resources and the in house routines to provide timely and fair updates for a system like Android. Microsoft owns GitHub which world make it easy for them to find the best resources and people to make it work. I have a hopeful conspiracy theory that Microsoft bought GitHub and started collaborating with major Android manufacturers like Samsung to facilitate a sneaky fork of the entire Android ecosystem. It would be easy for them to sell the idea to manufacturers. "You all get indefinite, instant updates for all your devices. No matter how cheap they are.". If I was a manufacturer, I'd buy that for a few dollars.

Network providers decides which security updates goes through to your phone. Not Google. Not the manufacturer.
Network providers almost always skip every second security update the first year. Two out of three updates the second year. Beyond that, you just have to pray they haven't deleted your model from their lazy to-do-list.
The security updates are also often delayed by weeks or months, making them absolutely useless as protection against CURRENT exploits.

We are talking about version update. Your windows is not going to have any version updates because it doesn't exist. As if windows 11,12,13...20 exist as a monthly updates. -_-

AnonD-754814, 07 Feb 2020You forgot to mention your operating system costs 100+$ base price. Nice try. It doesn't cost 100 bucks preinstalled on any device. The OEM license price is around ten-fifteen bucks. If you don't believe me, check what shady manufacturers are selling those OEM licenses for at online key stores like Kinguin.
