What intrigued me about the unpacked event was that they said that you would have to upload the file to You tube premium in order to watch it on your 8K TV. Why can't you just put it on a memory stick and plug that into the back of your 8KTV? Will the resultant files not be normal MP4s? Something seems to be a bit fishy....

Smartphones record much lower quality than cameras not just because smaller sensors. Also the much lower bitrate. Footage suffers a huge compression. The bitrate chosen is a choice from companies. More compression = lower quality
Almost all phones do 4K30 below 50Mbps. Sony alpha cameras do 100, which is considered lower quality compared to Nikon, Canon, Panasonic and Fuji.
Considering it is a cellphone, the 8K should have about 200Mbps.
I suspect it has 100 at most ...
Which means low bitrate and lower quality than it should.
That compression ratio is perfectly fine for HEVC. Even the 5 minute limit is acceptable considering it's a first-gen 8K phone.
What we need to know is whether the footage quality is remarkable or not. Waiting for the review to confirm that. I'm talking about Gsmarena's review, not Fauxmark's review.
Many people will record full hd videos anyway. Its more than enough.
Need to see the reviews
8k video recording is still bad for now because of the limitations..
