Microsoft's smartphone OS has been around for a decade and it had steady growth until 2007 when it reached 12% market share of smartphones and held that till 2008. Microsoft's OS had briefly taken over the second place ranking behind Nokia's Symbian, after Palm's second place and before Blackberry replaced it as second biggest OS. Then from 2008, Windows Mobile fell off a cliff. In 18 months their market share fell by half to 6% and in another 18 months, fell by another half. Obviously Microsoft itself killed Windows Mobile which in 2011 managed only a 1% market share, so Microsoft now tries to replace it with Windows Phone which had amassed a magnificently unimpressive 1% market share for itself globally for the first full year it was sold, when we remove the other Microsoft Windows Mobile smartphones, in 2011. The combined Microsoft smartphone operating systems market shares, together, for last year, was under 2%

Just in wireless, Microsoft is the mobile death wish. Their very first strategic partner and launch customer for Microsoft's first smartphones, UK based Sendo was driven to bankruptcy after lengthy court cases with the Evil Empire. Motorola went from profitable to loss-making in its strategic partnership with Microsoft smartphones. Motorola was so disgusted it announced it would discontinue smartphones on Microsoft platforms which gained it a lawsuit to boot. LG's strategic partership with Microsoft bled the company profits into losses and LG ran to Android. HTC, Microsofts' longest-serving smartphone partner was so upset with Microsoft, it refused to support the final version of Windows Mobile and now strongly prioritizes Android. If you don't know the history of how devastating Microsoft has been to its 'strategic partners' in mobile, like the vampire, its bled them dry. Read Horace Dediu's review of In Memoriam: Microsoft's previous strategic partners.
Damien Lord, 27 Apr 2012So Mr. Old Man... Sorry I got you snubbed... It was unintentional… But you saying fan boys are... moreDissected
(So Mr. Old Man... Sorry I got you snubbed... It was unintentional… But you saying fan boys aren’t 16+, calling a reputed company and their followers ‘Pathetic’ makes you what 50+???…)
Where did I call "a reputed company and their followers ‘Pathetic’" you clearly have me mistaken for someone else. Slow down, take a breath and re-read what (and who) you are replying to.
(too mature to understand the fact although discourse noise of an immature…)
Say what? Ill leave this one alone
(don’t go on my comprehensions or the language I speak, just for you to know, I’m a Tech Magazine editor,)
Really now? For which magazine may I ask? I honestly hope its not one directed at an English speaking audience. If English is not your native language then I commend you, if it is then, well well....
(and undoubtedly, a SAMSUNG fan… because for me, not the name of the company but technology does the talking, and so I write what’s factual)
Same here, minus the fanboy issue. What makes you think I see it differently?
(which may unquestionably offend some “in your primes” citizens like you who wants to see their subsequent company on the rise)
'subsequent' to what? LOL. There goes that language barrier again. I would assume you are attempting to paint me as a follower of a single manufacturer, guess again! I never alluded to such!
(I’m not a GEEK or a tech savvy person)
Not tech savvy, but a Tech Magazine Editor, riiiiight.
(but I deem talking with the whole story and not friction)
Easy on the friction now, we don't want too much static electricity. LOL.
Funny that you call yourself Damien Lord though, because I'm in the process of writing an impromptu thesis (long story) for an English Law class and I am presently dealing with the great Lord Denning. Do enjoy your day good sir.
Samsung gain the no. 1 spot due to Nokia's mistakes.
It's not the credit of Samsung at all. It's all due to Nokia's mistakes. ELOP is the main reason for this. The most bad decision taken by him was killing Meego & Symbian. I hope Elop heard this news. Now it's a challenge for Elop to bring back Nokia at no. 1. God bless u Elop.

I also like WP advocates...
Wait till WP7 gets released! It'll kick
iPhone's and Android's ass!
... WP7 releases, nothing!
Wait till the NoDo releases! It's going
to be a bomb!
... NoDo comes out, nothing!
No, no wait till Mango! Mango will
... Mango is out, nothing!
It wasn't the Mango, we meant
Tango, wait till Tango!
... Tango is out... nothing!
Naah, this was all nothing, wait for the
real game changer, WP8! When it's
out, it's going to destroy the iPhone
LOL, aren't you tired? WP sucks!
Nokia fans dont get panic.wp is a rising star.it is taking its initial steps.android also had these steps.and those guys who dont believe why dont u compare 4th versions of wp,android and ios.people came to know android after samsung galaxy s and for wp nokia is doing the same thing.why dont u guys wait for q2 or q3 results.
Anonymous, 27 Apr 2012and can u explain why it took 14 years for any company to become no.1 ?!Yeah, competition wasn't idle!

We never proclaimed that samsung wud take the top spot bcuz we believed that nokia sells way more dumbphones than sammy does. But sammy proved it all wrong. Again no one is saying that samsung wud retain the top spot forever. But i dont think that nokia has got any chance to recover the throne immediately. What with the fiasco with windows phones, when meego was doing fine, i dont expect nokia to lash back at sammy for at least another year or two n that is if they do get the sense to try n give better products at lower prices n most importantly settle down on a decent os. But there is no chance whatsoever of nokia beating sammy on Q2 n Q3 when they r about to unleast their ruthless beast, the galaxy sIII! I expect the galaxy s3 sales alone wud b enough to take on the entire of nokia smartphone sales for those two quarters!

You fanboys are totally absurd... your rejoicing with Samsung's unripe "success" in just 1 quarter.. again for the nth time its pathetic.
