Take this, the S20+ (non-5G) retails for around the same price as the Xperia 1 Mark II, which in itself is offering so much more things including sub-6GHz 5G connectivity.
If brand recognition is all that matters, then maybe all people will just buy iPhones since they're the most significant brand for smartphones today.
The problem here is that many of the commentators here who talk bad about Sony probably haven't even tried using their latest phones yet. Speaking of which, the most recent Xperia I have used is the XZ2 (since then, Sony never sold another Xperia here in the Philippines again, which is sad) and that one is a stellar device that I really enjoyed using. Price wise, it was really skyrocket, but for what it's worth, I do believe it deserves its price tag, since Sony never used cheap and short-lasting components inside.
Let's just admit that this year, Sony has nailed every single aspect of their flagship phone, and it definitely deserves to be on the top 10 smartphones of the year for being the most well-balanced flagship phone. Credit must be given where it's due.

Those 2 other brand i mentioned are already recognized as top brand, at least there are people willing to buy it, no matter what. Sony are left behind in the market. While the specs are top notch as of now, they have to strategized well-priced flagship in order to compete again.
Not to mention Sony minimize its cost on marketing department compared to other two (its a lot of money involved), its one of the biggest reason why it should be cheaper.
I'm a fan of Sony, but not a blind one. Bought most of Xperia flagship before, until they launch the hefty price of X Performance for the specs. Theres a reason why people dont buy Sony anymore.

AnonD-836132, 01 Mar 2020What's the F is with naming? That name alone will not make me buy the device. It's read as "Xperia 1 Mark II" and "Xperia 10 Mark II," the Mark II indicating both models being the second generation of their smartphone lineup that began last year.
It's similar to what Sony and Canon are doing with their digital full-frame cameras.
You aren't forced to buy these phones anyway, so don't pretend like you are. Besides, it's none of Sony's business that you're not that intelligent enough to understand their basic naming scheme.
If the price will be around 900€ I will buy it and replace my xz premium, which still works the same as the first day- excellent. But 1200€ is too much for sony fan too.
A huge improvement over the previous generation, even brought the headphone jack back which is good.
But way too expensive, charging speeds way behind competition and battery could've been a bit bigger, like 4,500mah to help support that large high resolution screen.
In summary it won't sell enough units to be profitable mainly due to that ridiculous price tag. Sony need to accept people don't care about their "brand" they are not considered one of the best smartphone makers and they can't charge the same price as Samsung and Apple

They're top tier quality, which is correspondingly more expensive.
The thing though is, this Xperia 1 Mark II, for roughly the same price as the S20+ (non-5G), has a lot more to offer.
If the Galaxy S20 Ultra and its disappointing results (according to GSMArena) is acceptable for $1500, then why not this one for $1250? You're getting the best of the best but you only want it in a $250 price range? Keep dreaming buddy!

The ... more865 chipset with X55 model alone brings a substantial price increase on BoM sheet. Depending on the quantity it can go anywhere between $70 to $90 compared to the previous 855 devices. That's a lot.
In Sony's case, there is a lot more hardware and software in this device than in previous flagship. How about the camera stack? The previous flagship tried to save money by using two mid-range mass production sensors from Samsung and only one Exmor RS. This one now uses two Exmor RS sensors, one brand new model and the other one from Xperia 5's main cam. Then there is DoF sensor and Zeiss coating. New camera sensor stack with glass is at least $25 more expensive if not more when we encounter hardware and software development for the stack (ie 70% of sensor AF coverage is something that was custom made for X1II)
Xperia 1 II is a good flagship, a little overpriced, but a good improvement. Too big for me, so I'm waiting for Xperia 5 II.
Whackcar, 01 Mar 2020Xperia 1.2 (I'm gonna call it that) is a great phone, but won't be commercially successful due... moreX1II is not going to be commercially successful no matter what cause it will not have a subsidized push at the carrier level. Carrier sales get you sales numbers but less profit, unlocked sales get you more profit but fewer units sold.
Sony Xperia 1 second gen. looks really interesting. It seems they managed to fix a lot of issues I have with my Xperia 5 - at least hardware issues.
Right now Sony is on the top of my list for next smartphone, LG V60 is close second.
Where Sony improved hardware side, LG seems more like a downgrade compared to V50.
Anonymous, 01 Mar 2020So, according to you if Apple spends $600 to make iphone and for example HTC makes a much bet... morehttps://www.cultofmac.com/658650/iphone-11-pro-max-production-cost-bill-materials-bom/
The manufacturing cost of these phones are a lot lower than what you might think. The iPhone 11 Pro Max costs only $490 to make. It retails for $1100. Even once you deduct advertising cost, employee cost (which is shared for other products too), R&D, and so on. You still end up with a hefty profit (which is how Apple became the first trillion dollar company).
My point is, these phones don't cost nearly as much to make as you think, and hence the manufacturer gets to decide how much profit they want to make on each product sold. The Xperia 1.2 could've easily been priced at $1000, and still would've made a hefty profit.
Feel free to do you own research on the topic.
with the effort to have both phones have an optimal feature, with others pricing as well, i dont think xperias are more expensive than others... people just need to look at the features that fits them... apparently, xperia phones, no matter how it fits to a person when that persin saw an ad from another brand that screams "you need this phone, your life sucks without this" then t her y might get that phone... but there are still people who will get this, like the xperia 1 that despite they exited the philippines, some are still buying online (been tracking online mall stats)... Dan Lok specifies the quadrants of consumers... some people like it cheap, some people wants the feeling, some complains a lot, and some knows what they want that no pricing or pushy ads can affect - these are few.
So the 1 II and the LG V60 are the only flagships released with a headphone jack. That doesn't leave me with a lot of choice.
Most advance sensor with 20fps@12mpx (60fps calculation) and real-time tracking (alle scene, head, human/animal eye). Can you Apple make something like this? Uuups I forgot you doesn't have any factories and such advance technology. :)
AnonD-836132, 01 Mar 2020What's the F is with naming? That name alone will not make me buy the device.Seems you're not familiar with their Alpha and RX Cyber-shot naming nomenclature, which already started long time ago... Every successor to the certain model in Sony Electronics, in this one, their professional camera products, its lineup will be added Mark to naming (Mark / Mk II, III, IV, so on..., and the prefix on Mark depends). In Sony case & style, its naming will be like this : Sony (product type name)(roman numerical gen)
Example : Sony A7R IV, Sony RX100 VII, Sony A9 II, Sony RX0 II and so on...
So, yeah, Sony new gen-Xperia will be following what Alpha and RX had done till now, like you seen now (Xperia 1 II, Xperia 10 II). You may found it unpleasant, but remember, because Xperia is now under Alpha supervision, it expected to bring most of Alpha typical featuring, including naming.
AnonD-836132, 01 Mar 2020What's the F is with naming? That name alone will not make me buy the device.Well. Names like 11 Pro Max, Mate 30 RS Posche Design, 7T Pro 5G McLaren , Find X Lamborghini, Reno 10x zoom are way worse.
