Even Chinese companies like Xiaomi makes better profits with flagship phones as well as mid-rangers because of value they offer.

A guy in a phone shop once.raved about his Sony to me, the one that first came with the super slow mo. after that, Sony started doing silly things, like that vibration thing. Odd. Shame, as I quite fancied a Sony phone.

Anonymous, 27 Mar 2020Xperia 1 has G lens for the main camera. Just like all other since Z1. G is the midrange ... moreWell, if u ask me, Sony just merge its mobile division starting Xperia 1, with fully transition now.

So whatever 'Sony' trademark naming on previous XZ & Z series phone such as Walkman, G-Lens, Triluminous is just pure 'marketing branding' only as they own the copyright. Maybe some of it supplied by 3rd party hardware, who knows?

Because i know for sure, all Z series Xperia with the 'G' lens branding, got nothing to brag about on real life usage.

But hey, come to present, this is the right move for Sony. If it merge all division 5 years ago, I know i wouldnt look at any other brand.

Of the three divisions of Sony:
--"Sony Mobile Communication": Money losing since at least 2013;
--"Home Entertainment & Sound" : Money losing since 2007, ever since the TV transition from analog to digital at around 2005-2007;
--"Imaging Products & Solutions": The camera division is doing well, running on top of the acquisition of Minolta. The camera market has been shrinking in recent years, but financially the camera division breaks even, at least not losing money. The 'camera sensor division' is the only sub-division within this grouping actually makes money.

Seeing the new Xperia 1 ii utilizes some technology from the Sony Alpha camera team, I somehow not that too surprised by this. Maybe sometime in the future, we would see Bravia tech in the next flagship Xperia.

Anonymous, 27 Mar 2020The only problem with Sony, LG, ASUS and such a like brands are ADVERTISING. They do not inves... moreadvertising cost money, if they do it like tv's, bus stop's, newspapers, etc etc, that advertisement has to be payd.

And who will pay? CONSUMERS as always, because what you think sammy and crapple are the most expensive phones out? - cause they invest a lot on the advertisements, and the consumer who buy the thing are the one paying for it.

So, no doubt the only reason sammy and apple are firsts on sales is because people only know they exists because of that, otherwise people will buy the first thing they see and not the thing they have seeing in somewhere.

Sony and LG or even HTC are losing money, they do "less profit margin" prices on the phones because they need actually to sell the phones, if they make advertisements all over the place, the phones will be the same pricetag as sammy or crapple.

Thats why some people still buy LG or Sony, cause the price to performance ratio is way way better than overpaying to something not so "much better", and only because they see ads or other people have it.

I praise brands like Xiaomi who dont need a lot of ads and offer the same thing as a samsung same tier phone, just because is cheaper doesnt mean is worse, many times is better. people just need to stop going all for the same cause your cousin or your sister have the s20 ultra, you dont need to have it, you can go and buy something you really want or need or have money to...dont waste money on things just for desire or just to "show off" you can buy it, but you cant really take advantage of. thats is called futile consumerism.

How ironic it is that their OLED TVs are superior to LG despite those being supplied by them to Sony.

A few days ago, I got bored at home because of quarantine, so I decided to mess around with the settings on my 2017 43" 4K HDR Sony Bravia TV, and I discovered that it has an amazing feature called MotionFlow that literally turns every high-speed action clips into higher than 60fps footages.
Doing some research, I found out that their motion smoothing is actually the best in the business, by far, and I do believe it's the same feature that they're using on the Xperia 1 Mk II.

The only problem with Sony, LG, ASUS and such a like brands are ADVERTISING. They do not invest a lot of money there and the sales are lower.

Samsung and Huawei are actually WORSE companies in terms of audio, camera (too artificial and saturated gimmicky photos), speakers. Even battery optimization are not good especially Samsung. And curved screens have no practical purpose. Soc, RAM, memory, camera sensors and rest are the same. And Android skins are pretty much more bloated on Sammy and Huawei than ASUS and Sony. But they are advertising.

Most people complain about LG, ASUS, Sony that they need to do something about their phones, but those phones are actually better in lot of aspects but not available on most markets.

Most popular reviewers are praising popular brands and spitting others only because they are paid to do so.

Phones became look a like a twins, and I will always buy first LG G8 for better audio and more natural pictures and for 50% of the price rather than Sammy expensive phone for same hardware specs.

oPaGanDasTyle, 27 Mar 2020this is just to mask the loss YoY in mobile and audio divisions, cause the profit is only big ... moreYou don't know what you're talking about. Audio and TV comes under entertainment. Sony is doing pretty good in this as well as camera division. It dominates in camera sensors and is 2nd in camera makers.

The latest Xperia flagship offers true front firing stereo speakers which no other brand (except ROG phone) offers. I do agree with you on camera software. They need to work on it and they are (Alpha team).

LG V60? Lol! Dual screen doesn't make sense. Boring design with notched display that looks like Galaxy S10 series, no UFS 3.0, underwhelming camera system compared to Xperia and other flagships, slow software updates and support, 128gb storage where as Sony offers double. Only plus point the V60 has over the Xperia 1 ii is audio output via the jack and audio recording.

Design is subjective. I like Xperia designs and the Xperia 1 ii is one of the classy looking devices this year. Xperia Z3 and 1 looks same to you? Lol, get your eyes checked. For your information, latest Sony phones are narrower (not squarish) and easier to use in one hand. So go use one and then talk instead of complaining by referring old devices.

oPaGanDasTyle, 27 Mar 2020this is just to mask the loss YoY in mobile and audio divisions, cause the profit is only big ... moreWell a couple things. They do in fact use dual front facing speakers that have been complimented by a lot of reviewers. The design is also complimenfed by most reviewers, saying thing like "beautiful" and "sleek" or "well polished". The feel of the pohne is praised by most reviewers for "just feeling good in hand". The camera software is betting better as of last iteration, but you're absolutely right they are still well behind the competition. I believe the issue for them which is hard to get out of, is instead of advertizing the hell out of their phones, for years, they rode the popularity they once had. This has put them in a hole because they let sales get too weak and don't have the profits to afford adverts and R&D.

oPaGanDasTyle, 27 Mar 2020this is just to mask the loss YoY in mobile and audio divisions, cause the profit is only big ... moreProbably some improve speakers and camera software will not save Sony mobile division. The problem is far more deep and in my opinion they will end up like HTC, LG and Nokia.
Their smartphone releases are not generating the same hype like Huawei, Apple and Samsung. Unless somebody is a true fan of this company and their phones, nobody else cares about Sony phones, sadly. It's just the way things are right now.

this is just to mask the loss YoY in mobile and audio divisions, cause the profit is only big in TV and entretainment, this is a "hide and seek" movement.

This wont solve the Sony problem, only thing that can change the mobile division and make it grow is to put better speakers and dual speakers (sony can do it, but is lazy), improve camera software (again, sony make the sensors but its lazy to optimize the software, its worse than the competition who use Sony sensors and that dont make any sense).

...and at least do decent prices, cause what the phones offer dont justify the price, just look at what LG do with V60, high end with extra screen under 1000 bucks...thats a lot of a deal, Sony need something like this to grow and dont make loss.

Meanwhile, i dont see Sony invest in foldable, or even in dual screens or another kind of phones, just the same boring design year over year, i can buy a Xperia Z3 and they will look the same as Xperia 1...confusing the design they use, brick style...i dont get it why they dont do more confortable phones to hold since is a pain use that squarish phones.

Hope to talk about Sony ecosystem vs Apple soon. They were pioneers in so many areas before anyone, and lost everything because of their stupid management.
