I think would everyone needs to understand. its about creating a half decent device. to get you into the eco-system on a budget. Not about creating a top tier device. something that's acceptable good at what it does. and shows the OS off in all its glory. And that's key point.

I.M.O there both perfect mid range devices. they do what there intended. but if I was in the market for a £400 phone. probably be swayed towards iPhone SE(2020) as its waterproof. granted no night mode. but what is the point of an amazing camera phone. as soon as you drop in a puddle its knackered. Since dropping my phone in water I will never buy a phone without some sort of IP rating, its just common sense.

Quality is also good. 4a will also have a 1080p ... morewell, iPhones have better video quality, wireless charging, and IP rating/better build quality in exchange for worse display and no night mode. They both take same tier daytime photos, so they are pretty balanced.

Plus, the down-clocking doesn't affect how the processor processes images.

In comparing the Pixel 4a to the SE people should consider familiarity. Android users are more likely to stick to Android phones, IOS users to IOS. Now, 4a isn't out yet but all indications point to an iterative improvement over the 3a. Meaning, there will be nothing major separating the 4a and the SE. Sure, SE has water proofing but the 4a will very likely have the better camera (the 3a has a better camera already). SE has the much better processor but processing power is not all that, as past phones (3a, Motorola Z Play) have shown. 4a has the bigger screen/more modern design, but neither phone is eye-catching.
Perhaps the only notable difference aside from operating systems is expected reliability. Apple has a history of making reliable phones, Google not so much.

For display viewing I'd also rather a cutout selfie camera in the corner
I'm not quite sure what you mean by a 'bigger' camera setup but I can almost guarantee the 4a will take superior quality pictures. Additionally, from a picture taking perspective (and in contrast with my first paragraph), I would prefer a centralised selfie camera. The only time I make use of it tough is in Snapchat, which I believe has access to the Pixel Visual Core because on my Pixel 2 the images do not suffer from that 'notably worse than proper camera app' issue I used to associate with Android (and still plagued the S10e I tried for a few weeks).
Finally, as the test run mentioned above reinforced, I'm willing to pay more to have a phone that isn't littered with Samsung's bloatware... But if the A71 ticks your boxes then go for it my guy - that's the great thing about having options!

For me it all comes down to water proofing. If it has an IP certificate i will buy it, since i need that. Iphone SE 2020 has shit display and under 2000 mAh battery !?! which is a big nono for me.

$ for $, I would go for the Pixel 4a because of its modern design. The SE2 looks dated.

sounds like this is going to be another weak offering from google, the 4 totally missed any mark for being flagship, even if this has a 3.5mm jack it will have useless storage, it's got the weakest camera. why do they bother? i hate apple but the se is better than this tripe.

For 40$ less can get samsung A71. Same processor bigger amoled screen , bigger battery and camera setup. 4a XL will cost another 50$ more. Both Apple and Google Having tons of money but gives product not upto the mark..Both can do better.
