That's absolutely correct.
Sony have failed to deliver what had been repeatedly advertised.
ICS upgrade was seen by Sony as a strong selling point.
That is why they always announced the peria lineup would get ICS.
That was a clever marketing campaign: advertising today's phones as fully upgradable and compatible with the next OS.
Did that work?
Apparently, it did.
Was that true?
What did Sony do when the time fot upgrading arrive?
They simply went back on the given word with a lame excuse and no compensation/alternative plan whatsoever.
Are customers supposed to "forgive and forget" the repeated lying and deceival?
Let's hope they're not just conformist sheep.
No use sony's fanboys and servants keep intoxicating forums and discussion boards everywhere.
The truth is plain to see.
Customers everywhere should be more than a herd of dumb fanboys suporting a company they're paying for.
Critical thinking is essential to survive among the masses of mindless conformists who apparently will gladly accept/take anything from anyone.
The only way to get back at these lying, deceving companies which provide no decent after sales support, which abuse our rights and despise customers the minute they get their money is to stop buying their products.
Xperia Play owners have every right to feel abused, deceived and should get the right compensation.
As Sony only cares about making MORE money, the only possible action is to stop buying their products.
If their sales and their profits actually diminsh, they will immediately realise they have done something wrong.
Sony's not a dumb company, but they're just testing whether their customers are.
Maybe this phone will have many problems and lags during playing the games...Because most of the apps are incompatible with Android 4.0...It will loose it gaming phone title...
Richard Walton, 28 May 2012This is a total (probably not permitted to swear here) move by S/Fony. I bought my XP a couple... moreI fully agree.
Too bad consumer laws are too indulgent and "forgiving" towards the seller.
In Europe it's quite impossible for an individual (or any small consumer group) to fight back at large companies/amufacturers.
Most "advances" in consumer legislation have resulted from marketing campaigns to try and prove multinationals meant well and make an effort to accept regulations.
As we already know only too well, these are times when capitalism runs loose and stops at nothing...
Me? I'm not buying anything branded Sony as I believe that is actually hitting them where it hurts.
They show they don't need or care about us, consumers.
Why should we need them?
Sony ahs released ICS updates for few Arc models.

It's really not the end of the world...
The problem I see here, is like many have said, fragmentation, bespoke software and of course bespoke features...
No other phone has a controller, and no other phone has optimised / changed games to suit this...
I suspect they could probably get ICS running on Play - but bear in mind, it's Google that creates the new versions, and they've made it flashier, more resource-intensive and ultimately unavailable on older phones...
Most people don't pay for their handsets, these are subsidised by carriers... and generally speaking you sign up to an 18-month contract - which means it should be running out shortly, and you can upgrade...
I'd argue that most electronic items made these days are almost classed as 'disposable consumables' - they're not meant to have a life of more than a few years...
I agree, Sony over-promised and it did not deliver, and under normal circumstances, if this was an arc, etc. I think people would have more of a reason for their ridiculous, childish outbursts.. and I'm the first person to say that HTC for me, when I had a Hero a few years ago - it took them almost 2 years to update the software, since then I've never bought one (but they've got better I believe)...
I think the Play is such a unique product (and very niche - it wasn't a big seller) that it is understandable that they cannot get ICS working as they'd like... and therefore - why not download a custom rom with ICS for it, like so many have done already?
It's certainly not worth crying over...
And there's a fix for everything out there!
the point here is not how important ICS is or would be to this phone.
It's a question of having large companies exploiting consumers, lying and escaping their promises.
If Sony's developers were competent, ICS could be suitably ported into the XPlay.
Would it be costly both in time and resources?
Of course, it would, but that is why we've paid so much for the phone.
Actually, avoiding fragmentation and having updated OS is also included in the selling price of any phone.
Making a phone as the XPlay obsolete in terms of software is obscene and reflects how little attention is paid to consumers and even to what has been broadly advertised by Sony.
The lack of respect shown is a bad principle and if accepted will become a dangerous precedent to any company.
All those who now accept and "forgive" sony's lame excuses will be to blame for tomorrow's copied attitude, whichevver the phone's/product's brand.
Ethics, moral and commitment aare values that cannot be forgotten:
Can I stop paying my phone's contract just because Sony's word was broken?
Are we, consumers, allowed to say "sorry, it was a misjudgement and I will not do as agreed?"
SONY major world corp. has set very bad precedence and in 2012!! -- overclaims -promises not meant to be honoured -getting away with bad service --poor products--insulting helpless consumers ..uncaring -- SHYLOCKS-- similar to WORLDBANKERS !! sony ought to have been sincere honest OPEN .. never mind xperia ics or not !!
PITY that no formal govt mechanism exist to hold to account "WORLDBANKERS" and sony and plethora of BAD SERVICES and service providers in 2012 -- shame !!

I think people need to grow up here..
I recently had a GS2 for a year, it was worth more 2nd hand than it was for an Xperia Play sim-free - so I thought I'd take the plunge (for 6 months before my contract runs out)...
What you have to remember is that the Play is 18 months old now, and it didn't have the best specs to start with... it's noticeably slower than phones released a year ago, let alone now with a much more memory-intensive hog like ICS...
Of course all companies make a promise to update their handsets, and Sony did do this, they invested in updating the Play to ICS - they created the ICS beta and before they released it properly they gave it to the community and to developers and obviously did tests on it themselves...
They have issued a statement (on Facebook) on the reasons why the Play can't be updated (go and read it before ranting) - it actually makes sense - they've had feedback from all quarters and it would severely impact gaming (which is what the Play is all about)
I think they've been transparent and honest throughout this (and I'm not a Sony fanboy, I'll probably get a Nexus in December!) but, on the whole, it's refreshing for them to have tried, invested money in investigating the option, but instead of releasing a broken update, they've said 'no' it would be better keeping it as is...
So now at least I can root it, get rid of bloatware and have a lot more memory!
To be fair, it's a great retro-gaming handset, but it's woefully lacking in storage / screen legibility and general performance overall... whoever got one of these last Feb - time to upgrade soon anyway!

"The phone definitely had great potential but was marred by mediocre specs and performance" Sony's motto is Make.Believe. Now we know why.
Their legacy is partly due to a lack of communication between soft/hardware developers. Besides Sony is tactical in its support strategy - only support the big sellers.
without those ics update i still love my xplay...still the best phone for gaming..

I wonder why gsmarena said "removed quietly". Sony made the explanation clearly in their blog. Anyway before bashing them, you guys should think whether you want a nicely workable phone or a laggy one. And working in a Japanese company (JVC) previously, I'm sure it took them many SQA trial and meetings whether to release ICS or not, and whether there'll be more pros or cons to customers.
If the money is in your hands, you should be the one to judge and research if the phone will meet your needs/specs. It's the company's fault if they lose customers and profit, but it's also your fault for buying a so-so phone yourself.
