This is a total (probably not permitted to swear here) move by S/Fony. I bought my XP a couple of months ago because of the commitment given by SE to update it to ICS. To now cancel it with a half halfhearted beta release and an insincere statement is just typical Sony doing what they do best; alienating their few remaining customers foolish enough to place trust in them in the first place... count me on that idiot list.
Is Sony seriously telling us that what they promised is actually technically impossible? its bs to suggest that they can't improve upon the supposed gaming problems. Lets say some of the problems can only be resolved by the publishers releasing an update or fix, if they do that down the line then great, otherwise the buck stops with the publisher. Its nonsense to suggest Sony would be slammed for that. What Sony is responsible for is updating its own games (PS/pocket Store), encouraging publishers to do the same, and fulfilling its commitments.
Lets say that Sony can't (or more likely won't) release the promised ICS update, what's stopping them from releasing a value pack and the source code so that other devs can prove it possible and their own dev team just incompetent/unwilling. I mean, other than their long cherished stubbornness and couldn't give a damn attitude? Never mind, I guess I answered my own question.
UK consumer law should now mean than I'm entitled to return my handset for a full refund, and I fully intend to do just that. I loved having a real gamepad to play my games with while maintaining the functionality of a mid-range smartphone., which needles to say beats the awkwardness of playing games by poking my fingers at the screen, but I'd frankly rather have all my fingers chopped off than keep a dead phone or buy another Sony product again. The only question left is what next, Samsung or Apple.

We just need to realise the money is in our hands and they're the ones who should keep us - customers - happy.
Not the other way round:
Being abused and deceived and still coming back for more of the same.
It's as simple as that: let's stop shopping for their products.
Translation; it's too much work to update the phone so screw it. Now buy our newer and more expensive phones!
i think its because they plan to launch a VITA phone
i mean next year vita specs are gotta be mid range for all phones.

ANONYMOUS ..U ??SONY TOUT .. HAVE SOME SHAME AND GET LOST -PLEASE ..
The only way to get back at these lying, deceving companies which provide no decent after sales support, which abuse our rights and despise customers the minute they get their money is to stop buying their products.
Xperia Play owners have every right to feel abused, deceived and should get the right compensation.
As Sony only cares about making MORE money, the only possible action is to stop buying their products.
If their sales and their profits actually diminsh, they will immediately realise they have done something wrong.
And Sony's not a dumb company, but they're just realising and testing whether their customers might be just that...
Just because Sony "abandoned" one of the handset upgrade you guys are making a big big fuss like the world's going to end.One day if Sony Really abandoned us all, then you really got yourselfs to blame.
That's really cheap of you Sony ! You could've explained everyone why you did that so that people would've been calm now .... I don't own a Sony Phone though ! But this is really pathetic !
Large companies such as sony cashing in on their lies!
Consumers must boycott these companies and make them feel they aren't above the law.
There are values such as ethics, honesty and integrity that are timeless, no matter how big/important you are.
so dont make any promises SONYmobile! now who wants to believe any of your words!...it's on history...you always late...and now...this shit happens...
just share the sources for the ICS to XDA Devs...opensource means OPEN!
AnonD-53994, 25 May 2012If ICS is bloated junk, how is it that apps like the browser score perfect/max benchmarks on tests? You are referring solely to browser performance, not OS performance. You can already get much faster browser performance on Gingerbread by using a 3rd party browser like Dolphin etc.
I'll repeat again - Android 4.0 ICS is bloated gimmicky junk. GOOGLE have done a horrible job.
Sony Gingerbread is also pretty good with integrated most of the ICS features you would want available months before ICS was released. IMO the only feature worth having in ICS is spell-checking, though I'm not even sure if that is present in the Sony release.
I think it's a great move to cancel the ICS update. ICS won't make the device any faster and ics accompanied with the bloatware that Sony puts in, the phone would be very slow. Even on my xperia ray, after a few weeks with ICS, I decided to flash CM7 running gingerbread. Much much faster and more stable.
AnonD-30323, 27 May 2012when the news of Sony not updating the play to ICS broke out there were mixed reactions. But I ... moreDisagree with you on the last part. The blame lies with GOOGLE for making Android bloated and then breaking compatibility.
Modest specs are a GOOD thing for the Play as it forces game developers to write efficient code which will work across many devices for well into the future. Contrast to PC gaming where to play the latest games you have to upgrade your PC every 6 months.
when the news of Sony not updating the play to ICS broke out there were mixed reactions. But I think Sony took the right decision by not updating the phone since it would have made the gaming experience of the phone terrible.even with gingerbread itself the gaming experience of the phone was not upto the mark.I think the blame goes to Sony in this department for not giving a decent hardware specifications for a PlayStation certified android phone.Hope they get their act together and they can give a better hardware and software for their next playstation phone whenever it comes out in the future.
why you all bought sony xperia play..its mediocre phone with slow ass operatingnsystem which is android...if u wanna play games on small devices get a ipodtouch4 u dig!!
Consumers were deceived.
A large multinational company has lied and an announced promise has been broken.
It's up to us, consumers to say: "Enough!"
Let's stop buying from them.
It's the only way to hit where it hurts them: In their sales revenues and stock market value.
No company deserves to make profit out of disrespecting customers.
To the people upset that PLAY won't get the ICS update, what would ICS bring to you that you feel you're missing out on so much? If you want ICS THAT BADLY they have the beta available for download. Maybe after you install it you'll understand why Sony didn't make it an official update to all PLAY devices: because it compromises smooth running of software, consistency and battery life; all crucial elements of a quality user experience.
