U nailed it.......Sony forgot that so many smart phones are there performing same or almost same functions.....at a lesser price.....
I think the biggest mistake was to cancel the compact line. I still have XZ2 Compact and it will remain with me until it dies, or I find suitable replacement. As of now, this doesn't look promising, the next one in the line could be Sharp, but that one is not selling in EMEA(EU). NO! I will not go for iPhone.
Samsung may be the only option for me, or eventually Pixel.

I have 3 xperias, the Z2 (nice design) the X (very average) and a chrome XZ Premium. The XZP looks a million dollars, bezels and all and I prefer to use it over my S9 Plus. The side finger print sensor is brilliant, the sim trays are crap and the cameras disappointing BUT shoots good video. My issue and why I wont buy another Xperia is their horrific price depreciation. I paid £649 and then 2 years later it has on some sites Zero trade in value. The new designs do nothing for me either and the pricing is ridiculous.

Somany new companies make good design good future
But sony still sleeping well. Only 80s kids know about sony is a good company, but New generation really no change. Better way make copy some discontinued samsung mobile.
Sad to say it, but the Sony mobile business wont survive next year, this current situation wont do any good either. People won't shelve money on expensive Sony phones since the market is pretty established at this point being iPhones and high end Samsung phones which takes most the share and the mid - low end market is exclusive to chinese brands.
Sony don't have any room to grow on those fields, i think the only option they have is to reduced the production to the minimum and aim to a very specific niche market but even that is filled by competitors like Huawei aiming towards photography and Xiaomi with their gaming related phones. Perhaps the only salvation to Sony mobile is to integrate their Alpha cameras series to their phones and making them a part of the Sony Alpha family.

Sony just does not have that in the smartphone space. Selling a good product for the same price will not work for them. It either needs to be considerably better or considerably cheaper than the competition.
I think Sony should look back at 2014 to learn why they had such a great quarter.
Some of the excellent devices Sony launched in 2014 are:
Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2a
Xperia M2 Dual
Xperia Z2 Tablet (both Wifi and LTE)
Z2 and Z2a were so ahead of their time, that Sony was blowing the competition out of the water. Look at Samsung offerings then: S4 and Note 3 had plastic builds, okay-ish cameras and bloated TouchWiz UI. Not to mention they
were not even water or dust resistant. The whole IP rating industry or company whatever owes a lot to Sony. The massive 3200 mAh batteries for the time were competitive on paper too. and 4k@30fps!
Not to mention the X2 tablet, whose form factor would hold GREAT to this day. Svelte metal and glass sandwich, top-of-the-line processor, a Full-HD display with a 224 ppi (take that Retina), water-resistance certification and a pretty substantial 6000 mAh battery for the time. And the tablet was only 6.4mm thick and had support for both Wifi and LTE!! Amazing for 2014!
M2 Dual was a great mid-ranger with SD400, the norm for the time.
In short, Sony had awesome products and were competitive and there was something for everyone. Moreover, no critical features were amiss, and Sony was not too badly lagging in the camera department in 2014, I think.

my z3 compact still fine with a slim rom and new battery. bought it in 2015
It might help if networks actually carried Sony phones these days. If you're not in the market for Scamsung or Crapple, you're sh*t out of luck here.
dbjungle, 13 May 2020I've had 4 Xperia phones. Sony phones are great conceptually. The problem is the design is u... morethe problem with Sony is not design, but rather pricing. By just slashing 100$ off their release prices, they could actually keep up competing with other brands, since their brand is still strong in other departments. Also, releasing something 2 weeks after announcing it could help them, too.
Just look at Apple, selling a 2014 design at 400$ in 2020 lol. I mean, Sony isnt even that bad lmao, their current designs are ok. They are free of notches and nonsense, so lets give them credit for that.
never used sony in the touchscreen era, so cant comment on their usage, but their marketing is like HTC, dire and non existant, both used to be big players in the phone market, both are falling by the wayside

If the same screen used on this flagship had hole or dual edge design, its price would be even higher.
Fearghast, 13 May 2020It's not suprising, they literally don't have anything meaningful on the market right now. Xpe... moreCan't agree more. I didn't really like Sony phones, but I still bought them because they were at least compact. Then they stopped making compact phones. Not sure what they were thinking of...
They advertise screen as main feature and haters want hole or notch.
Why would they do something that will ruin the screen?
If I pay $1000 or $1200, I do not want a phone that looks like cheap chinese phone.
Screen hole and notch should be only sub $200 phones.
All flagships should be 100% useful screen + front speakers.
It's not suprising, they literally don't have anything meaningful on the market right now. Xperia 1 II and 5 II can hopefully change that.
We don't need compact they said ... yeah about that Sony
... that was your only saving grace.
