Google was nicely climbing the ladder through Nexus 6P and suddenly you saw the expensive Pixel, after that it has been a disaster year after year. Nexus was a flagship experience with mass price points. Only two variants only in storage. They kept it very simple. Now they try to compete in an impossible battle with premium price points with below average experience. Even the camera department which was the main talking points of Pixel got beaten by its own Android peers. Very sad to see the Nexus line was removed!

So they'd rather have the 5G integrated into the SoC instead of on a mandatory second chip (as the 865 uses)? Save space in the device, saves power, better solution by far. And only a few gamers actually need the extra power of the 865. So frankly it seems a very rational solution.
Of course the sheep are going to go "boo hoo, it's not a flagship chip", but for almost everyone except the sort of plonker who uses Antutu scores as a measure of their self-worth it's a better solution.

No phone with a Snapdragon 765 should cost over $600 period. Sales are bad, lets over charge for a mid range phone. I keep saying only Apple and Samsung can do this. Anyone else will fail horribly. Let's hope Google isn't seriously considering this at $700.

i always though pixel is not a good phone, now they confirm they are unable to develop a descent flagship phone so they are downgrading (even more) their phones. We are far away from those glorious years in which we had many options to choose between good, very good and excellent devices, now they are preety much the same and we have just 1 or 2 descent brands (apple not included in my opinion)

Apparently, Qualcomm forced companies to buy 5G versions of the SD865. Only some major ones were able to get exceptions, and not for all devices. The 5G version makes it incredibly expensive.
Settling for the SD765 makes sense in that case, to still be able to offer something (relatively) decently priced.

Something is strange and curious. Google started the entire trend of superb HDR on smartphones (Samsung has good HDR before it, but obviously not on the same level).
And all versions of the Pixel phones had some hardware or software issues, and Google didn't do anything to improve them completely. Also, hardware was always lacking, and it still does.
And yet, the Pixel phones are priced way above their hardware weight. That's why the A series was added with even less impressive hardware, but with google photography capabilities.
If Google can cram 3 great cameras into the Pixel 5, keep the price way below $800 (more like $499), and use an average 1080p LED screen, people may still buy them. Also, the video quality needs to improve and the API also needs to be completely open for for apps to improve video quality.
I am guessing Google will make ISP alterations to the SoC to make it a lot lor lot more powerful.

It'll be 768g and not 765(g), there's no way Google can't release a phone with 768g in October when there's a phone with 768g and half the price of Pixel 5 already released in May, 5 months before Pixel 5 release date.

When I read the article, a remembered the MKBHD video on iphones. He commented on "This our fastest iphone yet" that your new device in any case should be faster than last one otherwise what's the point.
Pixel phones have visual core for image processing so that functionality might not get affected but 765 is marginally faster than 855 plus in only the "AI" performance. In all other aspects it performs lower than even 845. Which means two year old Pixel 3 would be faster than Pixel 5. Atleast it will have 5G for future proofing.

It's a pity they have got to this. Also, I'm sure another guy left too. Best bit, the ones leaving (not the photo guru, as he is decent), will walk into another excellent exec role elsewhere and take in the cash. Seen it throughout my working career, leaders that make a compete hash of stuff, then leave, on gardening leave for 6 months, and straight into another top end role. How you buy HTC engineers and end up in this state is beyond me. They could have rolled a dice and used the results to pick solutions and been in better shape. Thing is, they launch at the worst time of year, near black Friday, after Apple, and just prior to the latest Snapdragon. That loads up a lot of potential for buyer's remorse. I'd be happier with the 855 than the 765G.

Pretty sure they will offer 3 variants this/next year. a 5a, 5, 5 "pro". Mabye the 5a will be the 5 and they will drop the "a". Google better do so, since their "a"-series sells much better and "is" better for most customers.

The price is mighty high for a midrange device, hopefully this is actually the Pixel 5 price but coupled with the Pixel 5a specs.

LG Superfan, 20 May 2020I'm surprised I thought people would be bashing Google for SD765 is comments but I see some ar... morePixel flagships were commercial failures, while Pixel budget models were commercially successful. So Google is basically getting rid of their flagships, and instead focusing on budget phones (4a) & midrangers (Pixel 5). That is why the Pixel 5 will be moving to SD765 with a lower price tag. It should retain all the other flagship features like IP68, wireless charging, stereo speakers, etc. I think it's a good move. It's better than them just closing shop.

Woah. They're trying to go for the "No-Sales" Mark this year.
76xG will be old news by then, especially given the price of iPhones in the US.
To the EU it'll be something along 800-900€, so its a no show for me.
