Spanky, 21 May 2020Yes, more affordable 5G chipsets! But why does the article say that the Snapdragon 6XX seri... moreSnapdragon 600 series is supposedly midrange but Qualcomm has destroyed its reputation by downgrading it to entry level and creating too many chipsets. They're reusing the same GPU used in Snapdragon 670 for this upcoming SoC...and that was more than one year ago. Snapdragon 670 and 675 were underutilised because Snapdragon 710 existed. Snapdragon 675 and 665 GPU are weaker than 670 and 660 respectively. Snapdragon 665 only supports up to QC3. Other than GPU, there are some positive differences to DSP and ISP but nothing impressive.

Meanwhile, other semiconductors have better lineup that don't overlap and have decent upgrades. Snapdragon 400 series might as well not exist when Snapdragon 600 series takes its place. Snapdragon 460 hasn't been used in any phone. Why is that? Smartphone manufacturers may choose to use older yet superior chipsets for their newer phones. The release of Snapdragon 650/652 is the biggest jump Qualcomm has made for midrangers and it has aged extremely well.

We need good processors like these... We need good quality smartphones at even more crazy prices... I mean. I wouldnt under estimate these premium mid range processors... They do more than the job they need to... And for the price and tech in the phones they will be going into... Better value for money and capability for the price... Because some people just need a decent quality phone at a really good price with decent cameras. Does the job sort of phone. But maybe they only use it for calling, messaging. Browsing, videos. And maybe a few pictures here and there. And they probably don't play games. And if they do its probably something like candy crush... Well... These processors are more than enough and pretty powerful for everyday usage.... Why would that kind of user need more processing power?

I think you should buy 7 series or 8 series Snapdragon. To enjoy your phone and not get angry very often.

Plot Twist: Kirin 720 5G is an ARM A77 CPU with Mali G57 GPU and Kirin 805 is a 820 but both made at 14 nm by SMIC

Yes, more affordable 5G chipsets!

But why does the article say that the Snapdragon 6XX series is entry-level? Isn't that „honor“ reserved for the 4XX series (or even 2XX series)? In my opinion, the 6XX series is quite mid-range.

Why would this person need SD7xx or 8xx series?

Current 6xx (665/670/675) are better than 800/801/805/808/810/820.

At least 3, possible as many as 5, new 5G SoCs (with integrated 5G modem) will be forthcoming in the coming weeks. We should see a full price segment coverage of 5G smartphones starting from $150, well before the end of 2020. I will not be surprised if a $100 5G smartphone showing up towards the end of the year.

2020 will be remembered as the year UNO of the real 5G transition when 5G phones start to outsell 4G phones in some critical markets. For Xiaomi and many other phone-makers, the single most important focus is to secure a large enough piece of "the 5G market pie" so that they are better positioned to fight a long and protracted war in the 5G space starting in 2021. (By the way, selling 5G phones to 4G markets doesn't count.)

(Qualcomm sm6350 = SD695G; MediaTek MT6853 = Dimensity 600.)
