Anonymous, 02 Jun 2020Yes, why have more screen when you can have MOAR PLASTIK?Well, simply because you don't know the difference between screen and display ¿
First, you can have a top bezel under the same glass that cover the display, "glass" which is the "screen" while the "display" is its own thing, so it isn't "moar plastik" to have a top bezel, mainly on modern/recent phones, and even my GF's old Xperia XA had glass over the top and bottom bezels.
Second, even with a screen only covering the display and bezels, it doesn't mean that the top bezel HAVE to be plastic, a good phone will have a metal body, including for this part, personally I advocate the use of Titanium which is strong, lightweight, not as expensive as people think it is (for something as small as a smartphone it won't add much to the price), have low conductivity, it have the same extremely thin oxidation layer as Aluminium which mean it won't rust, and it can be brushed or polished to get beautiful finishes.
Third, I advocate way more the use of pop up mechanisms (such as seen in the Vivo V17 Pro) in conjunction with 3D Facial recognition for having :
*Real and uninterrupted Fulldisplay.
*3D Facial recognition sensors without taking any space out of the display.
*Privacy, which become increasingly important.
Pop up which can (should) be made with stronger material than plastic (Aluminium body) and electromagnetically actuated using magnets and small coils which make it basically failproof, near unbreakable, take near to no internal space and cost less than the motor based one, also obviously it is way faster.
Fourth, if I had the choice between plastic, that I don't like on a phone, and stupid notches or punch holes, I'd go for plastic.
Fifth, do you think glass/display is stronger than plastic anyway ?

Last update, (ONE UI 2.1) it enabled 4K/1080p@60FPS video in the front camera, and other tricks from the S20 family.

It caused so much "demand" on phone without top bezels that monstrosity that are totally illogical like phone with notch or punch hole with chin as big as what would a top bezel be exist in big numbers, peoples are most of the time too stupid to actually know what they want, they want what they are told to want, news media told them the new thing is bezeless phones, so they now hate any top bezel but still accept chin as a "compromise".
Do they even realize how stupid it is that rather than having just a thin top bezel with useful sensors is way better and smarter than the same band on the bottom but being totally useless and having to remove a chunk of the display to compensate ?
If peoples could think of their own and really wanted fulldisplay, they would prefer pop up camera, but here too news media kept saying they are fragile, moving part should be reduced, they wear down because they are mechanical, they are an additional point of failure, etc etc...
Without having actually a single proof of that other than their own opinion, result, nowaday, years after pop up cameras got released, it is a true challenge to find any online report of any pop up failure, proving their reliability, but peoples just keep repeating the same busted myths about them, just because, as usual, people heard something somewhere, so they repeat it without actually fact checking or having an opinion on it...
Which is actually exactly what I did here, if someone were courageous enough to read all comment from now to several month ago, when I started explaining that pop up camera aren't fragile and all that things and explaining why they aren't + why they are a good thing, almost everyone commented negatively about pop up, but look now, it become more and more rare to find someone saying those things about pop up...
Simply because I kept saying something without missing a single occasion, peoples don't even realize they got influenced, though in my case I simply told the truth, which is quite easy to spread for most simple subjects.
The reason because bezels aren't used anymore despite TONS of peoples preferring them over notch and punch hole, which by the way have now more fans than ever since the introduction of notches, and notches and bezels never were more hated than nowaday...
The reason is clearly NOT because peoples prefer them, the reason is simply brand taking no risks and simply, as usual, copying each others.
It started with Apple doing the notch (for a right reason, it is a shrunken bezel that contain as much useful sensors as possible) and Android copying it but this time as a dent on the display in an echo system totally incompatible with it and with basically no sensors other than a camera and the regular ambiant light and proximity sensors, but because peoples hated them so much, they tried to shrunk it, loosing both ambiant light and proximity sensors as we knew them for stupid small and poor variant that probably ironically also cost more.
But the notch was still so disliked that it was forced to get smaller and smaller until it became the teardrop notch we like to hate.
But it was still hated and remain really undesired nowaday so they simply kept the hole and stop removing the surrounding, hence creating the punch hole.
But despite popular beliefs it is still undesired and the next goal is to make it as small as possible regardless if the front camera quality is affected...
From the beginning what peoples always desired is simply to get rid of those things, at least those with 3D facial recognition or other additional front sensors are justified, but still the only things that this trend lead to is the inevitable disappearance of notches and punch holes.
Most brand even release official pictures with wallpapers hiding the punch hole, clearly it isn't a desired thing, peoples don't want them, they only want fulldisplay...
But as I said, pop up is the best way to get fulldisplay, it give uninterrupted display, it give privacy, the camera is protected when not required, it doesn't cost much, if peoples really did know what they wanted, we would already have seen it by now...
Which is why, at the beginning I wrote "demand", because this isn't much a demand as a hate against anything not notch and punch hole, like for the pop up, and THIS is something that influence a market more than what peoples "want".

Current trend now most people wants bezelless phones and they can accept either notch or punch hole as compromise, that's why phone design with bezel on top (even slim bezel) are somewhat not used anymore.

I've been waiting for the Pixel 4a XL in order to get an XL with a fingerprint sensor, (and the headphone jack would have been handy too), and it's not coming :/

Peace"big forehead" is still better than the idiotic notch/punch hole, on Pixel 4 it gave 3D facial recognition, a feature that Android phones seriously miss.
And it is infinitely better to have a useful top bezel than a tiny hole only there for the useless selfie camera while having a big chin as most smartphones nowadays have, caused by comments like your one here.

Google realized that, this ... moreEven though S10e is still a capable device, is a last year model.
I think Samsung missed the mark this year with not releasing a sub 6" flagship device. Or maybe they are waiting to see how the SE 2020 will sell and then they will surprise everybody later this year with some S20e. Hopefully not with Exynos 990 on board.
But, if the rumors are correct and Apple will release a 5.4" phone later this year, I am 100% sure that in 2021 a lot of Android phones with sub 6" displays will "magically" appear on the market..again.
Not that is bad, I am waiting for a sub 6" flagship phone 2 years now. Or at least some different models to choose from (not just Google and Samsung). It's sad that the Android customers need to wait Apple to dictate the market trend again.

All decent budget phones are always build in a phablet category, since "large display" will be a go-to marketing point. Could you find a decent compact budget phones that has the competing specs of the likes of Redmi Note, Realme, or Poco? Say, uses an equivalent SoC of Snapdragon 720 or Dimensity 800, >4GB of RAM, with a camera that at least 1/2" sensor size? I double dare you.
