Ughh... Honor play devicrs are only good for 1 year... going from oreo to android Pie and its all boring after that... We need updates ffs...
And huawhy will only have 1 major Android update like what they did with previous honor play, no android 10
With US interfering with all their might in Huawei's way, I'm afraid the LAST in-house good SoC Huawei has used was 2 years ago, which is Kirin 980.
If u look closely on Kirin 980's successor, 985 & 990, they don't bring ANYTHING new, much worse, they are regressing, as 990 use Mali G76, instead of G77 like they used in 985.
With this, the ONLY remaining rivals for Qualcomm are Samsung (Exynos), and MediaTek (Dimensity series).
With the upcoming Samsung's SoC using reference ARM architecture, combined with AMD graphics, this could be a game changer if they played & timed it right.
As MediaTek, they have done great with Dimensity, but, as usual, they still lack in GPU department. I just hope that they could use another PowerVR GPU like they used to do with Helio X30.
Mali is good, but they have to put MANY cores to make it decent, like Samsung has done all this time. This is something that MediaTek could not afford, as their goal is to make the SoC as competitive as possible.
This is one of the reasons why people keep comparing flagship-grade D800/D820/D1000L/D1000/D1000+ with SD7xx series; they pack powerful CPU but pathetic GPU, making MediaTek SoC unappealing for many OEM.
Now this kirin 990 variant is an actual successor to 2018 honor play, let's hope Honor launches it at an aggressive price tag (300 usd) coz they they don't have GMS anymore, also oneplus z is coming at around 350 usd tag with clean Android experience
Ok, first thing in my mind upon seeing this is "What's Herscherr of Reason doing there?"
I thought they gonna use kirin 820 in play 4 :(
