Nokia is one of the finest tech company for networks. it is among world leaders and one of the highest patent owners. If nokia makes something, its more likely gonna be one of the bests if not the best.

Anonymous, 16 Jun 2020Current Nokia is HMD, not Nokia. Please learn about Nokia Corp. before posting such comments. HMD is just a tiny part (the tiniest) of Nokia.
        Nokia has 8 subdivisions:
        1.
Nokia Networks (which is it's largest subdivision). It's the world's third-largest telecoms equipment manufacturer. It creates Network infrastructures for whole Countries (2G,3G,4G,5G, military network equipment etc).
        2.
Nokia Technologies. Consumer products and Licenses
        3.
        Nokia Bell Labs. (R&D)
        4.
        NGP Capital.
        5.
        Nuage Networks. (software & clouds)
        6.
Alcatel Mobile. (yes Alcatel. The Chinese TCL only uses the licenses for creating the phones)
        7.
HMD Global. (Basically Nokia Mobile. It's running by former Nokia staff, with little input from the "mother" Concern)
        8.
        Alcatel Submarine Networks.
(installation services for optical submarine cable network links across the world's oceans)

I appreciate GSMArena-folks' effort to bring news from both sides of the 5G market (consumer side and telecom equipment side).

This chips (and this article) has nothing to do with cellphones. Nokia Technologies doesn't make cellphones (do not make confusion with HMD), but makes 5G network equipment (towers).

HMD is not Nokia, it's an independent business. They got permission to use the name Nokia on cellphones for a period of 10 years, and they are paying royalties for this.

I dare to bet my money that this contract is for the upcoming flagship 9.3, as it will've SD865 which doesn't have cellular modem built-in (especially 5G).

As for other mid-range, the upcoming SnapDragon 'might' introduce similar 'setup' (SoC w/o cellular modem), that's why Nokia think it'll be more 'cheap' to just buy the SoC, without needing to pay more for external cellular modem, as well as the patent fee.

The problem is, does Broadcom deliver good cellular modem?
Intel was horribly sucks, while MediaTek & HiSilicon are out of question.
