Miui upgrades will be there but you are lucky if you get Android version upgrade after 1 year and security updates after 1.5-2 years.
While Android One phones like Nokia devices all get 2-3 years of Android version upgrades as well as 3-4 years of regular security updates.

My 4 year old Redmi with 2 GB ram basically became useless with MIUI after a year and half, i tried removing excess apps, factory resetting the device but nothing helped. Since then I have been using custom rom on it and it works like charm.
Modern devices seem to work good with MIUI just because the chipsets have improved a lot, not MIUI. Also MIUI seems to have good battery life because it kills every background process, I never received notifications of half of my apps on MIUI but they all show up now on the custom rom. Also MIUIs adware engine and data collecting apps are always running in background, that's why the aggressive memory management to compensate for the loss of memory and battery life.
