I hope Google puts a depth sensor camera, or a ToF camera on the Pixel 5.

I can not explain that Google again misses the opportunity to use a periscope tele camera. It's only one component that leads to hype, makes the camera and the phone immediately more interesting and isn't offered by Apple. I think that a periscope camera is also a status symbol. I think it could be the easiest and fastest way in order to make a smartphone more successful, if it doesn't cost much more. Google seems to totally forget that it was its HDR+ camera which made people buy phones like the revolutionary Nexus 5x. But that's a long time ago. It seems that actually Google doesn't care about the camera anymore and I have the impression that Isaac Reynolds is a bad manager, who suffers from the illusion that Google's super resolution zoom can compete with 54mm tele cameras although it's easy to test that it is not even close, actually in perfect light conditions without shadows you won't really see a significant difference, when compared with digital zoom, only smoother contours due to machine learning.

Quad Bayer sensors don't offer that. Quad Bayer sensors have one(!) (sub)pixel per microlens. That's fundamentally different!! That's why the Imx 689 is advertised with "omnidirectional" autofocus, which is Quad Pixel autofocus instead of Dual Pixel autofocus. Quad Bayer sensors don't have that.

Google is obsessed with dual pixel sensors (because they use them for portrait mode depth) and Google also doesn't seem to pay for custom image sensors, so not many high resolution dual pixel sensors are left: The Samsung Gn1 (72mm², 50 megapixel Quad Bayer Dual Pixel) or the sensor of the Huawei P40 Pro (75mm², 50 megapixel Quad Bayer Dual Pixel). For high resolution photos the Sony Imx 689 should be even worse than Quad Bayer sensors due to the microlenses that cover multiple subpixels. So there aren't many high resolution dual pixel options, so I guess the main camera will have just 12 megapixels as Google is obsessed with dual pixel sensors.

The 2x2 on lens tech ipwas created by Sony to improve light sensitivity, because there is gap between merged pixels which is waste of surface.

It was supposed to improve AF, but BBK phones fail to achieve this.

If it has an ultra wide angle camera, the only way for Google to prevent a disaster is a high resolution main camera sensor with a very good lens. Quad Bayer sensors are usually very bad for high resolution photos due to the different color array. But it could be possible that Google found a way to handle the different color array. An alternative could be a traditional 48 megapixel 70mm² Bayer sensor. If they choose a sensor like the Imx 689, this would be bad news. The Imx 689 is neither a Quad Bayer nor a Bayer sensor, it's a Quad Pixel sensor and has four subpixels per microlens (Quad Bayer has one microlens per pixel), so it isn't really a 48 megapixel sensor, the 689 is just a 12 megapixel Quad Pixel sensor (12 megapixel Dual Pixel sensors are not called 24 megapixel sensors due to the same reason).
Regarding the ultra wide angle camera they should use a camera like Huawei's 18mm.

Google isn't going to release a newer phone with a faster SoC, 5g, 90 htz, bigger screen, ultrawide camera, and bigger battery with only a 100 bump in price. I swear, some of the crap you guys spew is shocking.

Selling it under the nexus branding does not make the phone worst or better. But for the old nexus fans maybe.

The bigger ones will have their battery compromised in some way due to lidar and 5G ... it's kinda funny that the "lesser" version might end up being the best iPhone of 2020.

Pixel 5 should only be priced $100 more than the 4a at $349. The SoC isn't a huge step up. It has a slightly smaller screen and lacks a headphone jack. Only thing we're paying more for it is the wide-angle len. Should only be $100 more.

I don't like iOS but the 5.4" iPhone 12 looks to be a much better deal even if $699 if Google decides to price these for $599. If priced at $449 or $250 cheaper than the cheapest iPhone 12 would be a bargain.

Most people are tired of buying smartphones already.
