The best solution would be, as I wrote earlier, to put in the back of the phone's case a compact and foldable version of this :
That way, no more front camera to cause issues and the user can still use camera + display, plus it is cheap.
Kamikaze, 30 Aug 2020I totally agree with you on that one, it's so annoying when people who have been using sm... moreDitto of my answer to "ishreal":
And you know what change with it ?
Before that, you could just put a specially made cover :
It was more difficult with the punch hole but still faisable, or at least you could put your finger, now you can't, but more importantly, it give illusion of privacy.
Take any phone with a pop up, that is well known none are IP68 rated, and take ANY IP68 rated phone with similar number sold, guess what, you'll find there are MORE of the IP68 rated that died because of water than the non IP rated, pop up phone, you know why ?
Because IP rating is NOT a guarantee, nor waterproofing, it is just a guarantee that SOME, brand new phones, randomly selected, have passed a non repeated test under perfectly controlled lab conditions, yet peoples fall for it and want it, result :
Many die in water because of that, and of course, no warranty cover water damage for any Smartphone brand.
Here, this is the same, hide the camera, peoples will forget about privacy, which is a seriously dangerous thing.
Also, because of this stupidity that will become widespread like a virus like the punch hole did, other solution like pop up will disappear, don't ever think it mean that no one want that, the phone industry doesn't care at all what peoples want, but because of the trend effect and peoples like you who aren't aware of what privacy is really about, the only solutions we have will disappear.
So go read about privacy before talking about it, and if peoples like you keep spreading totally erroneous ideas like that, of course we will always be, funnily enough peoples like you will actually be the first victimes to cry about the over agressive unethical use of collected private data, because peoples like you who say things like that about privacy are the kind of peoples who doesn't care until it happen to you.
They should just give you an optional to remove the front camera for a -20usd or maybe even -50usd off.
I know this might be mind blowing for some people, but you can JUST TURN THE MAIN CAMERA AROUND AND TAKE A PICTURE. Yeah it might take more than one try, but at least you are using the best camera on your phone and not a shitty 720p or 1080p camera.
ishreal, 30 Aug 2020lol so you were putting tape over your phone's selfie cam before under display cameras? I... moreI totally agree with you on that one, it's so annoying when people who have been using smartphones for years, suddenly discovered that cameras can expose their privacy, and if they already knew that then why all the fuss, it's the same thing. Under screen camera can be hacked, just like every other camera solution that we've seen in the last decade, except for the pop up camera. You can't stop the innovation, you're lying to yourself if you're thinking that underscreen cameras are a new era of the no-privacy phones, you were always exposed and always will be.
notafanboy, 30 Aug 2020you're still in the minority. Either deal with it or do something about it. That's h... morePolite and well behaved peoples are also a minority, does this mean they are wrong ?
There are many exemples of minorities which are the way to go.
And even there, how do you know we are a minority ? Have you made a survey ?
Because one thing is sure, there is no lack of peoples who are in favor of removing the front camera.
And by commenting our desires to have phones without front camera we ARE doing something, those have influences, the issue is that everytime someone have an idea that isn't THE trending thing, there is always idiots to waste all our efforts by putting his negativity and most of the time without even any valid reasons into it, making the idea appear as not worth it to an outside observer.

ishreal, 30 Aug 2020lol so you were putting tape over your phone's selfie cam before under display cameras? I... moreThat's exactly because of idiotic comment like that that privacy is at risk.
Not only illegal privacy data collection is something that isn't that old and have seen seriously more footprint with time, the first phone were certainly not leaking out data, and there were near impossible to hack considering the didn't had internet access.
There are many peoples who actually cover their camera, the issue is that many ignorant talk about privacy as if it wasn't something important, most peoples doesn't even know that it isn't more about "maybe, there is a chance a picture is taken without my consent" but rather it is actually about "many apps and websites DO collects data, including pictures, if I am lucky, no use that can be detrimental and totally unethical will be done with it".
It have been a WHILE since data collection isn't about targeted ads but about mass surveillance and selling informations, if you think you are out of danger, you are wrong, just because you have some ethnic origin or you work for X company, you can be targeted for racism purposes or being spied upon and the cause of corporate secret leak which can lead to millions of dollars invested gone in an instant.
If peoples were more aware about what the real extend of privacy intrusion and its real dangers were, plus if they were given tools to easily protect themselves without making it unpractical, the vast majority of peoples would be privacy aware and do privacy save practice without hesitation.
But there is always someone like you to talk as if privacy doesn't matter.
Just one thing for you, brain interface are coming, and I am NOT saying that just because of the Neuralink demo, I also said it before, it is a fact, it is the way forward.
And one day they wouldn't be optional, for many official things, like taxes, justice, bank, insurance and many other, it will be mandatory as both an identification and an "anti lie", so you'll literally have no choices in like 10 years than using those.
Now the question is, do you prefer to start fighting EVERY privacy intrusion practice now, without thinking that any kind "video, audio, location" is not important and guarantee a future where it is mandatory and enforced through hardware protection that privacy is respected...
OR you prefer a future which is what we are currently going to, where not only big companies have access to your brain, but being the case in a future where after a decade, privacy intrusion have worsen and the unethical things done with it have reached unprecedented levels.
And that is only if lack of privacy haven't literally killed you before that :
Your call, but for me, between a stupid useless camera that cause more issues than anything else, is trying to come with an expensive tech and that could be simply compensated using a solution like a described with the foldable mirror accessory, and literally a future where dictatorship with unrestricted access to our brain is a thing, the choice is easy.
Furiounx, 30 Aug 2020Lmao you're so right. I don't understand the people coming on and wanting no front c... moreYou know what, lets follow the exemple of those wanting to remove the Jack and make ALL new phones without front camera and say to those who want their useless front camera to make one for themselves with Bluetooth one they can buy, funnily enough the cheapest are connected through 3.5mm Jack, the sweet irony.
hmm, 30 Aug 2020These al companies dont make the compact phones. All they do is going bigger and bigger. How d... moreThat's simple, they don't even care about what peoples want, they just all make the same phone because the other also make them without considering a single minute user preferences.
And there are actually many peoples who want smaller phones.
Phone becoming bigger is because not only we try to put more tech in their body, but mostly because we try to make them thinner and thinner, funny part is that this is totally useless under around 10mm to make them thinner, it isn't more comfortable, it doesn't make you earn more space in your pockets, or anything, in fact it cause phone to become taller and larger which take way more space in pockets/bags and a lot of users feel not confortable holding too thin phones, and with all the negative points it come, there is no point except having a marketing argument purely based on number but not on real use.
The ideal phone would be between 10mm and 15mm, not 8mm.
15mm is the average thickness of a finger, which is natural and totally not thick, in fact, if thinner was better, TV remote and console controller would have been super thin since a while, but we voluntarily made them round, because it is more ergonomic.
Oppo did try an extra thin phone with the R5, at under 5mm, but it was a fail because in real world, phone such thin is a bad idea, thin phone in general isn't that great.
If they made 10mm to 15mm phone the new norm, most of what you want would be available.
Like bigger battery, less expensive devices (density is expensive), smaller phones (for the same density, a 6" and ~12mm phone would be quite easy to manufacture, etc.
This isn't about being parano, literally, it IS a FACT that we are spied upon through the front camera, and this is also a fact that those data are illegally collected and totally not ethically used, and could have seriously bad consequences in the future and can have it right now through hacking (or selling of those data) and blackmailling.
And screen destroying things like notch and holes really need to stop anyway, pop up are great but peoples complain despite not wanting to buy them making them unpopular, and underdisplay camera have real and serious drawbacks, just getting rid of the front camera would be much simpler.
Furiounx, 30 Aug 2020Lmao you're so right. I don't understand the people coming on and wanting no front c... more"make it yourself"
That's a common and very ignorant argument. If it was easy to make our own phones, you don't think we'd do it? I actually tried and not ONE company wanted to even give me a quote for crowdfunding purposes. If you don't have connections, forget it.
AnonD-909757, 30 Aug 2020Well, sadly, the same way pop up phone are rare and there are no phone with no front camera an... moreThese al companies dont make the compact phones. All they do is going bigger and bigger. How do they even know what people want if people have no choice to go bigger and bigger only. Some people buy based on hardware specs and dont care that the phone is bigger so that signals them that people want bigger screen. People who buy based on low price but all in that segment is already over 6 inch screens too so again how do they understand that people want bigger screens when they have no choice.
I want compact phone that have something 4000mAh battery but screen wont be not bigger then 5-5.5 inch and something middle class hardware and cost under 200 euro. Only option for smaller phone is Samsung A40 that is already over year old. there a41 is already 6.1 inch that makes the thing too big.
Again for compact you can get only with some very low end P22 like performance that are small phones or then it's stupid expensive apple SE 2020 or few years ago Sony had compact phone that was always only flagship specs so it's price was around the same as Iphone SE or even more. Tbh i am not even so paranoid about having a selfie camera. I just dont like it bein as a notch/teardrop/hole that is taking space from the screen while all the phones pretty much have enough bezel space on the bottom of the screen that can house the camera. Just move the bezel on top of the screen and have no bezel at the bottom. For me this space around the side of the notch/teardrop is just wasted space. You have your notifications and indicators of sim card and battery on the sides and the clock and thats about it. Watching some video will have a cut out of the screen or just black ine on the side. With the hole is just a hole in the video or in a game. And why they do it is only to have bigger number for specs sheet for screen size even tough you wont have more useful screen
No innovation on form factor these days. We are stuck with rectangular slabs. I wouldn't mind square or round shaped phone.

It doesn't matter if it's in a bezel, in a punch hole, or under the display. The selfie cam is never covered up by anyone on their phone so privacy went out the window a decade ago when the first phone had a front camera. Stop kidding yourself like you all of a sudden care about privacy when you're just like everyone else and keep your selfie cam on your phone completely uncovered.
notafanboy, 30 Aug 2020you're in the minority and there will never be a phone without a front camera. Sad for you.Lmao you're so right. I don't understand the people coming on and wanting no front camera at all. Like ok? Make it yourself you're not the only one companies have to sell to.
I feel a lot of those under-display votes were bots wanting to 'see the future' for the sake of it. I like innovation but this is a privacy nightmare...
Not fair! It should have a choice: Keep the minimal bezel with multiple mini sized cameras front camera setup.
