When the original Nokia 9000 Communicator was released in August 1996, Windows CE (which ran on "Plamtop PCs") was still three months away. With the exception of cellular / telephone capabilities, "Palmtop PCs" were *mostly* feature comparable to the Nokia 9000 Communicator, but it would be several years before they gained any significant traction (and even longer before they featured integrated cellular / telephone capabilities).
As for BlackBerry, they were making popular products - but nothing which was even close to being feature comparable to the Nokia 9000 Communicator... It wasn't until about 2006 that BlackBerry started to gain traction and take over the smartphone market in the realm of professionals.

The problem is phone companies are doing obscene profits. For example See what Apple is doing. They are charging 3 to 4 times of the manufacturing costs. Yeah, there is always costs for development but not that high. Things are getting out of control. The problem is the same people clapping and cheering at these companies when companies are simply cutting their pocket.
