Also, if you increase the sensor size to somewhere around 1" and don't push the MP count too much (like let's say 48MP or 12MP in binning mode), you can still have decent amount of colour information from each binned pixel while benefitting from tremendous boost in light sensitivity.

And while shooting at the sensor's full resolution would be a bit more difficult with this sensor, the combination of super resolution image stacking + pansharpening technique using white pixels should give you a decent result.

Black and... moreThe reason why it didn't fare extremely well was the parallax between two separate cameras. Huawei's Mate 10 utilised monochrome camera to increase the resolution (which worked out well for general low light shooting and digital zoom), whereas XZ2 Premium used it for sensitivity improvement (which helped with ultra low light shooting but sacrificed still image quality in general low light) - but neither of them managed to sort out the parallax issue therefore they both disabled it for close distance shooting.
This new filter layout essentially solves the issue and trades chroma resolution & sensitivity for increased luminance resolution & sensitivity.
Vivo is more innovative than Apple.
Look at their flagships in last years.

Curved sensor patemt is from Sigma.
Night Modes on all major flagships has shown that the difference is much smaller than the claims. All major flagships have very similar low light abilities.

Also the tvs have chips to process images, sony X1 series are much better than chips used by LG. Better quality using LG oled and LCD.
Those Master oled monitors used by Sony Pictures (cost more than 8K tv) are Super Top Emission tech.
Yes, fun fact is the Samsung ads mock LG oled tvs and say theirs are burn-in free.
But they think their mobile oled are the best.
Cant even make 10bit screen, while LG, Boe and China Star can ....
Perhaps the next big thing with camera sensors in general would be Sony's rumored curved image sensor.
It would debut on their Alpha lineup first (possibly a medium format sensor) before we get a similar thing on smartphone sensors.

That, and also the fact that they're the biggest OLED manufacturer in the TV department.
Ironically, Samsung's obssession for Super AMOLED displays on their smartphones is exactly the opposite for their hate to OLEDs on their TVs.
Sony is the only one that balances both, with their top-tier OLED TVs and their excellent OLED smartphones.
Heck, even their flagship Triluminos IPS LCD TV is actually better than Samsung's flagship Quantum Dot TV.

- unless you have a fusion chip like xz2p, you cannot use both for video, just photos (only after post processing).
- merging has limitations like lack of hdr, no macro etc ...

In RGB Bayer every missing R, G, or B value can be inferred from two adjacent cells. In Quad Bayer, from one adjacent cell and another not quite so adjacent cell. The level of non-adjacentness gets extreme in this RGBW.
The cynical view is that these so called "nnovation" is not driven by technology but by marketing: hey we need new cool jargons to peddle our wares, why don't you engineers cobble something up? Sharp Quattron, curved TVs, camera notch, and "AI" come to mind.

Black and... moreIt was because not everyone has implemented such setup properly. Only Sony was able to maximize that system with high ISO capabilities that even beats the P40 Pro+ in low light video recording (XZ2 Premium).
Sadly they chose to go down the usual route of simple 12MP sensors for better capturing speeds, but perhaps we could see those things back again once the SoCs for Android gets powerful enough to handle those complex hardware configurations.
