I've only heard of LiDAR being used on self-driving... moreSamsung has been using them for two years on their phones, all other people in the world calls them ToF cameras. But, Apple naturally has to call it something different to maintain the lie that they're inventing things.
They're a mixed bag. They can potentially add to AR experience, by detecting edges. Improve image processing of close portrait photos and videos, but they can't see very far so there is a very distinguishable cut-off effect when the ToF camera's distance limit is reached.

Thought Apple was going to use 12Mp 1/1.76 like samsung, but 12 pro max has 1/2.55" again.
