That is why I switched to AMD Radeon cards, it's miles cheaper than the equivalent Nvidia card and it's open source-friendly.

Andreidinutu, 14 Sep 2020Nvidia is gonna keep it's neutrality. Also amd still makes good enough chipsNo. They'll get the results of R&D first for Nvidia products and a period of exclusivity. As owners they will make overpriced Nvidia products, called premium ones, looks better by increasing the cost of licenses for other manufacturers/brands.

So more people will have to shift to mid-ranger phones as flagships will have prohibitive prices. Hopefully Huawei and others will shift to Risc-V. But probably Apple will be forced to stay with US proprietary technology by their government and push/force some trade between Nvidia an Apple...

How much will cost Qualcomm SoCs in the future after this? Even more...

There'll be a lot of regulation problems. I hope Nvidia can manage these.

Personally, i dont really like where this is going.. Arm under nvidia.. Hm..

I dont really sure about the future of arm with nvidia track record..tegra 2, tegra 3 flashbacks...plus their hit or miss sometime with thier products & price to performance ratio a bit high. . Besides, they is a US based company..

Take note that this is just my personal view & opinion.

Good Thing:

Things will continue to usual for next 10 years, NVIDIA will develop ARM based servers with RISCV Controllers.

This Deal accelerates RISC V Development

Bad Thing:

Until Google make Fuchsia RISC V compatible nothing can be done against ARM Dominance.

RISC V is a very long term project, it's a 25 year project, so you won't see mainstream desktop, mobile RISC V processors until 2045

Sure we already have SiFive RISC V Cores but mainstream adoption at least 25 years away, according to a speaker at RISC V Conference.

Remember it took ARM 40 Years to be what it is now, so RISC being 25 years away isn't too much.

This is only a good thing as long the Nvidia follows "neutrality" but I would say that this acquisition isn't about that, they basically want to acquire ARM and this targets one of their long lost customer Apple. Nvidia has issues in terms of bad practices to a point that their Linux opensource driver support was frowned-upon by Linus himself. lol. For the benefit of the doubt, we can say that Nvidia has much more technological know how for ARM than what Softbank can, let us hope that these tech will not become proprietary only for Nvidia to consume.

cyber, 14 Sep 2020huawei just take the biggest hit ever, sonn they will made only pots and pansNah, TSMC was already pressured to stop taking orders from them, so this deal changes nothing. It was a known fact that the Mate40/Pro will be the last new arm-based SoCs they'll get. At least they managed to get the 5nm Kirin this fall and they've already invested billions in building their own chips from the ground up.

abigfanoftechs, 14 Sep 2020When ARM is in US's hand, the US government will decide who can have access to it. This ... moreThey already do so. U.S government forbade ARM and other foreign companies from dealing with Huawei, since they use some "U.S technologies".

Adul Al Salami Kebab, 14 Sep 2020Now we can have ARM powered Nvidia laptops with GeForce graphics? Yay, worst part of this deal... moreDon't worry. The Chinese will advance their own processor, like they did previously in chips, when they didn't like the treatment, and Risc-V, meant to be superior to Arm, will be pushed elsewhere as well. They suddenly poured enormous money in, and so many chipset companies are Asian now. The thing about Arms and partners, is they developed a lot of open standards in the mobile space, and chipset manufacturers developed functionality specific circuites, all which can be rapidly shifted to a new processor. If they wanted to start today, they could make significant progress in transfering a lot in weeks. By beginning of next year you could see chips complete, ready to produce, just because of the queing for fab design test and production cycles. An uncommitted fab could be ready to produce in a month or so from now, putting together finished designs. Not the sort of thing you want in an election year. It's not cut and paste design, but close. The software recompile and iron out might take longer. Chinese aren't interested so much in playing chicken, if they can just run and win their own race. Time to invest in India and other countries.
