ugly curve design.
Bring back the monolithic sharp edges pure rectangular boxy design that Samsung copied like the sexy stylish trendy modern contemporary Note20 Ultra design.

They are the very best. In Singapore in Buguis Street a few years past; I was told by a reputable retailer "these phones are usually a bit expensive compared with the competitors, however they always have the best software in the classy hardware. And you can make/receive phone calls on them too". I agree.

But in a smartphone small sensor & pixel size, software enhancement also needed, in order to mimicking bigger sensor. Just make sure dont exaggerate it with more artifacts, should be ok. Sony just use the software part a small portion only, therefore the 'blown highlight' parts still emerge because of hardware limitation. I like Huawei implementation more than Sony in this matter.
Mine is vanilla Mate 20, which is a 1/2.3" sensor as well, but with f1.8. My last Xperia was Z5, (same sensor size, but the 20mp decision is stup!d, makes the pixel size smaller, just for the sake of marketing). As I own both Sony & Huawei phones, even my older Honor 8 Pro smokes Z5 and my other older Xperia in camera department, by quite a huge gap.
'Something I have notice on youtube, many just open the app and in less than 1s take photo.
This way, of course phone will never recognize if HDR is required'
Agree.
Dont care so much about color reproduction, as long it looks identical as real life. My final images will be edited anyway (like my samples I show earlier). Funny enough, Sony actually been critiqued for its worst color accuracy in actual camera world (greens & skin tones), where Canon & Fuji shines. (Starting A7Siii, Sony color science becomes bettter).
PS what do u mean about 'deep blacks' because of excessive HDR? HDR brighten up the shadows to match foreground & background, not deepens it.
Best part of the video:

I suppose a 1/1.7" can do better than 1/2.6" ..
Reason that even with horrible software P20 Pro can easily beat Iphone 11 Pro in any situation.
Mine is 1/2.3" f2.0 ... Rarely turns cloudy days into giant white mass.
I do not think it has more DR than current xperia.
Something I have notice on youtube, many just open the app and in less than 1s take photo.
This way, of course phone will never recognize if HDR is required.
Someone from a photography site says same, she gave about 2-3s and results were very different.
Xperia has always been made to behave like their cybershots.
Even colour reproduction is similar.
Sony does not want to give blue clouds, dark blue sky in daylight, yellow faces or deep black like other do because excess of HDR.
Anonymous, 24 Sep 2020But your mate 20 will use image stacking no matter if you are taking photo of your child sleep... moreTheres another part where youre wrong. Huawei phones wont use image stacking all the time. Instead it acts like Auto HDR, only triggered in challenging situation (high contrast scene, indoors, lowlights). When the 'sharpening image...hold the phone' text appeared, thats when image stacking happens (not all the time). This applied either with Master AI on or off.
And I repeat again, if using Pro Mode in Auto, image stacking wont happen at all. If u own the phone, u can definitely sees the image processing differences.

Xperia will never do it. Because action shots cannot use stacking. But the phone does not know which type of photo you want.
Stacking leads to WB issues. You will never get near correct WB stacking images.
Some parts will be brighter than they are , other bit darker than they are.
Cameras have way more DR than phones at least 50% more, they will choose foreground or background in expense of the other.

Some of my sample photos taken by my phone. Mostly of it are my daughter, which obviously a fast moving object (LOL). Notice that I have no problems focusing on the subject, along with plenty dynamic range to play with. This is my 2 year old phone already (Mate 20). All my previous Xperia could not get close to its quality, at all. And I saw same thing plague on the newer Xperia as well (despite the rest of improvements).
At least I know how my Mate 20 camera works-
Master AI - Auto HDR image stacking, boost contrast & saturation base on scene detection (I would not use this, at all)
Master AI off - Auto HDR image stacking, no scene detection, therefore no boost in contrast & saturation (this I mostly used)
Pro Mode with everything untouched (Auto) - No Auto HDR image stacking, no boost in contrast & saturation (this I use when want to play with some lighting effects and deeper shadows)
To me, thats what a point & shoot device should works in Auto Mode. I rarely using fully manual, as I've got Fuji XE3 camera to do that job.

Easy, it is like auto mode with HDR (image stacking) ..
By the way, in many ocasions, exposure issues are caused by shutter.
If you have cloudy day, shutter slower than 1/1600 is not supposed to be used.
I have seen photos of xperia using even 1/100 in daylight.
Mine rarely drops from 1/2000s.

Turn off HDR of other phones, same issues will be seen.
If DR was that weak, not turning on HDR would solve.
Phone cant use HDR 100% time because it cannot guess if you plan to shoot still or moving subject.
It do not remeber if the comparison was done by Eprice Taiwan or Mobile01.
The difference between DRO and HDR. Very different.
While DRO just exposed better than girl's face at expense of background, HDR kept sky from overexposure.
