It saddens me because that shows they can't be even 5 minutes away from a smartphone. I know this evolving world we live in, most everything will be on our smartphones but the addiction is rather extreme.

Do I care about IP rating? No. Do I blame certain others for wanting an IP rating on their phones? Nope. More choices = better; always and forever in my book and that's why I agree with your view too.

People having more risky behaviour doesnt translate to IP=bad either.

Water resistance depends on the body yes and the tests are there to see if the body holds up. While IP isnt everything, it at least has you not worried about 2 drops of rain on your phone. Take the phone with IP and use it wisely. You at least will not drop it in the water and then need to go buy a new one

Get real, many IP rated phones get damaged or die from water and water damage isn't covered, the only thing that IP rating does is give you peace of mind, which actually encourage peoples to have a risky behavior with their phone and water, only causing more IP rated phones to get damaged than non IP rated phones, which is the exact definition of being detrimental as it cost more, don't give you anything more and create cognitive biased resulting in problems.

Based on water resistance, I'd take anyday a non-IP rated phone from a brand that cover water damage than an regular IP rated phone.
If you think that a certification is what make a phone water resistant, mainly a certification where the tests are performed on few, brand new and undamaged and not work devices on a non repeated test in lab conditions with strict time limit and with clean water, and with absolutely no tangible proofs that some devices didn't failed the test and having the brand bought their way through receiving the certification nevertheless, you are the one needing a brain.

I hope the fact that it isn't IP rated will slightly help peoples understanding that IP rating isn't what make something waterproof or water resistant, that a smartphone (or anything else) can be water resistant without IP rating and that IP rating is useless and cause more harm than anything else.
