Swordman, 25 Oct 2020There's quite a number of 2019 flagship phones that can be found for around that price. O... moreOK Cliff Clavin 😜 ! None of those phones (OnePlus 7 Pro, Mi 9, S10) are anywhere near the $350-$400 price range you mentioned. Now I'm talking about reputable cell phone dealers here and not some guy on kijiji !!!

For me, marketing numbers are irrelevant, and I do not need this upgrade. I understand that UX may improve, but it won't last long. Few weeks after a purchase I (as any human) will get used to it and start take it for grated -> want to have this feature (high refresh rate) in every other piece of tech -> spend more money. At the end of a day, tech companies and hype you-tubers are the only real winners.
If it only had 3.5mm jack then maybe

$549 is not a bad deal either. Considering that you get a good yesteryear flagship chip and mainly the gorgeous 4K display.
SD855 is still quite fast as per my day-to-day use. No worries about that.

but some refused to accept...
i love lg v50s for its dual screen and more of its capabilities, even planning to buy it from a colleague... but borrowing it for a couple of minutes i knew that it is of low resolution... been using z5 premium... even my xz2 compact is sharper... but still planning to buy it... next year, maybe since i already spent huge for a phone this year... or i might get the v60 or velvet with dual screen...
luh... these are just some unique phones i am drooling over... and my wallet says no... ha ha
There is no point discussing resolution on pentile oled mobile screens. It has uneven sized subpixels, it has bigger gap between subpixels, it even has disproportionate color subpixels compared to rgbw LCD and OLED. That's why FHD panels on large screens are not as sharp as LCD panels, they are soft. Unless pentile OLED is at least QHD+ or FHD on a small screen like S10 it looks really bad. That's why Sony's so called 4K matters a lot more on pentile OLED than it does on LCD like in XZ2 Premium. All of those who say they are not able to tell the difference have never seen it in person. Difference is obvious even on a camera on YT video let a lone in person. Difference between QHD+ and Xperia 4K is obvious as well, not as much as compared to FHD variations but it's obvious.
Fearghast, 25 Oct 2020I used this camera for a year, it's mediocre. Constant focus issues and crushing shadow d... moreI am highly doubtful about focusing problems. A lot of honest reviews of this phone have never mentioned or faced such problems. Perhaps if you compare it to newer phones then there could be a difference, but yours could either be defective or you were just testing it to the extremes, where no camera autofocus performance will be great.
As for exposure issues, it's about time you learn how to use Manual mode. It's just a tap away from the screen, heck you can even leave everything in Auto, then enable HDR if you want the artificially brightened look of the other phones all you want. Hell, you can even just import GCAM port on the phone if you want to, as the main camera's API is unlocked anyway.
One thing's for sure is, I've seen other more expensive 2020 flagships with worse camera image quality than this phone.
I was talking about 4K in general, and that already includes any screen size ffs. You are talking about 4K on 6"? Are you even that aware that this phone has 6.5"?
The point is that you are supposed to look on the screen as a whole, and not stress your eyes by looking closely and find pixelations, cause obviously you wouldn't notice it past QHD+ already.
Sony's X-Reality Engine upscales lower resolution contents to near 4K quality, so even the lowest of quality images and videos would look far better on the screen due to that upscaling method.
"A 1080p content viewed on a 4K screen would still look much better than the same content on a 1080p screen."
Last year was just the beginning of their regrouping for this new lineup and strategy of collaborating with different Sony divisions. Still, their attempt wasn't anything bad at all; definitely NOT as bad as how you're desperately trying to make it look like.

The video capture on the other hand, especially when using Sony app, was pretty good through (but not even 4K@60 capable).
BTW Nice attempt to ignore my point mentioning the 4K panel on 6" screen, let me ignore your part of the "response" as well :D
I am so glad Sony fixed so many issues when they introduced the second generation. I guess even they knew the first one had so much room for improvement - and it probably did not sell at all due to those issues. I hope they can win user again, now they started trying again.
Fearghast, 25 Oct 2020No, this phone is Xperia 1 II but the bad, ugly duckling version with mediocre camera, patheti... moreThere's no such thing as a universally "ugly" or bad. I can even say the same thing to the phone that you consider to be beautiful. Okay, it is ugly to you, but not everyone share the same opinion as you do.
Camera is definitely inferior, but FAR from being mediocre. If anything, it can even beat last year's S10+ in low light photography as well as nailing the proper white balance (there's nothing that can beat Sony in this matter, that's a fact based on multiple tests conducted on Xperias against Galaxies, iPhones, Pixels, Huaweis, and other Chinese flagships).
It didn't have the most stellar battery life, but neither is it so bad. In fact, it was very impressive for such screen size, resolution, and battery capacity. The latest iPhones even have smaller ones, but nobody is against them despite costing significantly more. Hypocrisy??
No headphone jack was the only con on this phone, but pretty much everything else missed out on this thing. Not like it should ONLY be Sony that needs to get blamed for stupid moves.
Obviously the 5 II is already better. It's a NEW 2020 flagship phone vs an OLDER 2019 flagship. What do you expect for $400 more?
Nobody cares for 4K? Then why do we have the ability to shoot in 4K? If we don't need 4K, then we should also get rid of 4K video recording options altogether, since there's no proper 4K smartphone screens to display them in their native resolution.
Besides, if you've watched SomeGadgetGuy's comparison video of the 1 II and 5 II, then you'd definitely know that higher refresh rate drains more battery than higher resolution screen. The only thing is that Sony has done a marvelous job at optimizing the battery performance on the 5 II so that it lasts long enough even with high refresh rate, but surely having 120Hz all the time costs significant amount of juice. 4K, on the other hand, is no longer as much of a battery hog as it used to be. The only reason why the bigger 4K phones have inferior battery life is because their screens are much larger, and 4000mAh is not enough for the ultimate long-lasting battery life.
Shanti Dope, 25 Oct 2020Not even comparable. It costs almost twice as much, and is not entirely superior either with t... moreNo, this phone is Xperia 1 II but the bad, ugly duckling version with mediocre camera, pathetic battery life, no headphone jack.
With headphones to boot Xperia 5 II is infinitely better option any day - it even last more than a day more on battery.

This is basically what the world is in general. If you don't pay these so-called "reviewers," then they'd bring you down to the deepest and give you the worst image to the society.
It already happens in political histories, no doubt they'd adopt the same toxicity and abusive actions in this category as well.
[deleted post]It's a dead brand that's why they still continue to review them, right?
Lol, at this point I'm already certain that you're all just talk and you are a programmed autobot to repeat nonsense words against Sony.
Here's what you can do: you can reply to me again and again and prove yourself that you're stupid. If you reply, then you're ugly too! Go ahead! Reply to me, okay?

It doesn't matter if you don't need to have a 4K screen phone. You still don't have the right to decide what is worth it for the others and what not to buy for them.
Fearghast, 24 Oct 2020Not worth it at all - Xperia 5 II + headphones is much better deal by a MILE. Not even comparable. It costs almost twice as much, and is not entirely superior either with the lower resolution display.
This phone with this discount is essentially an Xperia 1 II on the cheap.
