This move will only be making sense IF they offer store credit which can be used for charger OR digital purchase so the people that already has a charging brick can use that for something else.
Doing this only without any compensation is a scam.

isnt their separate adapters comes with their own packaging and why not they're reducing same mrp price of particular adapter from their device, give option to buyers if they need adapter with device, if they opt to not, then they should reduce adapter price from total, not charging same but no adapter.

it's not like we can use our old 10W adaptors with our phones since the new ones have massive batteries and 25W+ charging capabilities. (if you consider a 2-3 year upgrade cycle)
Even if they don't go for it now due to bad publicity, they'll definitely do it next year!
Especially now that the new processors are faster than we need - proven by the 765 flagships, the way we're going we'll be paying to get the latest android on our existing devices in a few years time

How they come up with this "saving the environment" excuse?? Apple and Samsung and others possibly? They are seeing more money to grab here...
People will still have to buy the accessories. And if a person already has an old charger at home that can use, it most definitely can't use the latest fast charge technologies etc
If people are gonna buy the accessories apart, brands will still have to make them, they will still have to make more boxes. SO the environment is gonna suffer as always. The difference is that they fill their pockets even more...

And what's more interesti... moreConsidering how vast Android market share is and the fact that each and every one of them having same USB-C port rather than a proprietary lightening port of an iPhone, it is common for everyone to have more than one such charger lying around in their house. No matter the brand, any cable can be used to charge. That's not the case with Apple. And yeah, for every dumb action of Apple, there will be many goats who follow their such actions.

Apple started removing the 3.5mm jack.. then others followed... now removed the charger and earphones... the other might follow... next 2 years they will remove the phone itself (just use VR / AI smartphone ONLINE and get a box with paperwork... and others might follows if it'll happens... hahahah
