That phone has a 1-inch camera with a native 2.4 micron pixel. Even to this day, no smartphone brand can still beat it. Even Nokia didn't do it.

JDK, 05 Nov 2020The problem is, 48MP is often far worse than the 12MP mode and not worth the usage. It might a... moreYeah, if the camera simply outputs the 48MP image without proper processing then in some cases it can look worse. But some manufacturers have already developed and are actively improving upon the stacking algorithms to deal with noise, distorted patterns and lack of dynamic range, and if done well photos taken in 48MP mode can far exceed the detail level of those in 12MP mode as long as the lens is sharp enough.

"Who needs lossless zoom when you have an optical zoom lens?"
First, so far no phone manufacturer released a phone with a proper optical zoom in a last couple of years (Mind you, a fixed FL telephoto camera is NOT optical zoom). Second, lossless zoom can be used to mitigate the sudden image quality jump when the camera switches to the telephoto lens, thereby allowing the companies to put higher magnification lens for the telephoto camera. Colours remain consistent during lossless zoom as the same main sensor will be used to capture an image, and cost and internal space of the phone can be saved as well.

TL;DR - You're not really losing anything by replacing the regular Bayer sensor with a Quad Bayer one, therefore it's far more reasonable to do so. One approach cannot be "better" than the other when the former offers no advantage over the latter.

Native 2.4 micron pixels would be better, but at this point no one offers it.

You will still get more details out of a regular/stacked 48MP mode, and with right software implementation it can be even used for lossless digital zoom and to minimise the quality degradation in the intermediate zoom range between the main camera and the telephoto camera.

"That's why I think apple's implementation of stay at 12MP but make the pixels larger is the best"
Since you're missing out on option to even use the 48MP mode that way, Apple's approach is objectively worse still image quality wise.

I honestly think that 12MP is enough for all photos.

Plus, the default mode is 12MP binned.

48MP is an option, but it still lacks detail compared to the 12MP binned mode. So, 48MP is pretty much just a gimmick that barely does better than the 12MP mode.

That's why I think apple's implementation of stay at 12MP but make the pixels larger is the best.

And at night time you bin to 2.4 micron pixels. It's much more versatile than only 12MP and 1.7 micron pixels as in iphone 12 Pro max, which is still a small sized sensor. Had they jumped to a 12MP sensor with 2.4 micron pixels, it would be much better, but who knows how long that will take to happen.

The shift from 1.4 micron pixels to 1.7 isn't exactly massive, but better than being stuck on 1.4 like Pixels. I'd take a significantly larger 48MP sensor that bins to 2.4 micron pixels at 12 MP over it with ease though.

What you said is true only if you use 3MP/5MP/8MP downsampling mode, whereas the phones I just listed can achieve 2x zoom at much higher 10MP/12.5MP settings. If they also had an option to shoot in sub-QHD resolution then obviously they would be able to extend the "lossless" zoom range hella lot more just like Nokias, because you know, mathematics.

Welll one advantage I'm not seeing with QB pixel binning is lossless zoom, only oversampling pixel binning can do that. That is why Motorola One Zoom's oversampled 8MP photo look miles better than the pixel-binned 12MP photo.

Heck, I'm seeing more disadvantage over advantage with QB. The only advantage I can agree with QB is bigger effective pixel size/pitch. But I see more disadvatange with lower detail clarity and upscale demosaicing that couldn't offer the same photo quality when shot with full unbinned resolution. Xiaomi's Mi 10 Ultra upscale demosaicing really shows the problem with QB sensor - great on 12MP mode, total crap on 48MP mode. Even manual downscaling didn't help at all!
