The end of Huawei.45nm chipset when there is 5nm chipset. Their phones won't sell well.

Huawei is the only brand who could win against apple in the US. That's why Tim Cook asked Trump to block them. Huawei has the potential to beat it in sales.

FYI Huawei is already using an all-Chinese chipset for phones and tablets: the Kirin 710A, a 14-nm offering made by SMIC in Shanghai.

Yep, they'd rather make their own than rely on Qualcomm's insidious chips. They'll start making them when their hoard of chips run out.

Vasra, 02 Nov 20203 years minimum before they can even get down to 14nm. This will not save Huawei. It will help them improve and maintain any damaged 5G stuff they have currently deployed, the power consumption may be higher but for a 5G tower it may be fine. For phones? No can do maybe when they reach a reasonable node in the far future?

Congratulation US, you made your enemy stronger !

Don't underestimate how fast they can catch the 5nm train, they don't need to re-invent the wheel, they only need to pay well enough experts who worked on this on other labs.

The US clearly want to prevent them from using any processes that, supposedly, belong to the US (while in fact, as almost everything US wise, it have been invented elsewhere), that's why they forbid any other country using "US tech" from working with them, but they can't do that with any Chinese compagnies.
So Huawei don't need to invent their own processes, they can freely copy existing one without any issues.

And if the new dictator of the US isn't against China, Huawei will rise again, perhaps even there will be a call clearly telling the truth, which is that there are no proof Huawei were spying.
Or China could anyway use the Uno Reverse card against the USA whose there are tons of proof they are spying everywhere and cause an international boycott of the USA, which would be so great.

[deleted post]Obviously this whole fab thing isn't related to their smartphone chips (IF they will be able to make any) at all so it's not something you will see in devices you will use in future.

I've been wanting them to do this for a while. This move will safeguard their future. They can rely on Qualcomm (which is getting a license to work with Huawei) until their factory is able to produce flagship grade chips.
