Why tf google even bother making phones? They are so terrible at it. Smartphone business is not kiddy party. Google should focus more on stealing people's data rather than making phones.

Fearghast, 02 Nov 2020TBH It wierd how much faster it feels compared to Xperia 5 with Snapdragon 855.I had an Xperia 5 too, it felt extremely sluggish to me.

I have afeeling Sony's light looking Android is anything but.

              I just bought a pixel 5 - $799 (Canadian) - a relative bargain - at least by comparison.

And you know what, coming from a pixel 2XL the only major thing I notice is this phone is smaller and has a way longer battery life

And you know why that is all I notice?

Because I suspect like most people I use it to make the odd actual phone call along with email, texting and some video chats - not exactly things I need that latest and greatest chipset for or pay $1500 to have.

I think Google actually gets this one - average person would rather a reasonable price (well sort of) than the latest tech that they'll never come to appreciate... can't remember the last time I had the need to run some benchmark test!

Chris, 03 Nov 2020GSM arena's hate towards Pixels is actually even higher than we initially thought!Somehow I also agree with comment. I found gsmarena article too bias for such experience site.

Btg there was another gsmarena article on "pixel 5 gets ONLY 120 score on dxomark" eventhough 120 is a great score especially for a phone without a telephoto lense.

Thus either gsmarena does not like pixels or try to get lots of comments from its audience.

What do people expect? But it’s google. Plenty of tech sites and youtubers are already defending the Pixel 5 by saying that people don’t need that much performance to begin with. Google can release an actual turd for the next Pixel, and people will still praise it as the best Android ever.

They basically just become Apple fanboys, but without the Apple part.

"But then Google decided to either downclock the small cores and GPU or use a very aggressive governor, which operates within a more conservative power envelope, further prioritizing battery life at the expense of performance."

I can believe the governor bit since I always play with the CPU governor on my Samsung's custom ROM using SmartPack-Kernel Manager app. I remembered using smartmax_eps governor which is great for battery performance, but seriously woeful for performance.

it's amusing to see many spec snobs here got triggered when optimized Pixel5 perform just as fast as their high end SoC phone in daily usage...knowing Google even downclocked the processor just adding more salt to the injury lol lol

Though it may be true that, "flagship chipsets just don't make sense for most people", if Google wants the Pixel & Android to thrive and flourish, it should and must create a flagship phone with the flagship chipset to portray android at its best. It would be sensible to produce a flagship and a medium range phone.

If it's going to be ... moreYou know that benchmarks like these only measure raw performance ? It's not a good measure for real performance in apps (like smoothness or speed of opening them). The pixel 5 is better than other S765G phones in real use case.

But, I should honestly say Pixel 5 is the... moreAnd I forgot to mention, Pixel 5 & 4a 5G are the only phones that offer 5G "mmWave" in all the countries, whereas other brands while marketing using 5G tag, offer only sub-6 band in markets other than US & South Korea, despite charging same or even more.
Now pls don't ask me how much mmWave matters - well it matters! Atleast as long as companies market their products with 5G tag.
Atleast for this honesty, I don't mind appreciating Google. They have no substandard chipset or hidden restrictions in non-US markets.

It's fast enough for daily use but yes it has a worse gpu than the 4, if you don't like it don't buy it.

However, i prefer it this way, rather than paying at least a 100$ extra for sd 865
