Anonymous321, 11 Nov 2020can it run the software that runs on intel based computer?Yes it can via emulation.
ali, 10 Nov 2020m1 is revolutionary in the world imagine you can run mac apps on your phone!!It's the opposite, now you will be running mobile apps on your macs.
AnonD-804996, 11 Nov 2020Tflops is not everything. And hasn't been for a while, especially with gaming. It's ... moreI still play pc engine games at resolution of 256 x 240 every so often
Anonymous321, 11 Nov 2020can it run the software that runs on intel based computer? No, at least not without a VM or some sort of compatibility layer that apple will likely not provide in order to push adoption of ARM apps.
imparanoic, 10 Nov 2020Isn't 2.6tflops a bit weak in performance for 2020, compare to PlayStation 4 pro released... moreremember this is a 10w tdp SOC
imparanoic, 10 Nov 2020Isn't 2.6tflops a bit weak in performance for 2020, compare to PlayStation 4 pro released... moreConsidering the chip has 10W TDP (I don't know how this number is calculated by Apple, the TDP can be varied between manufactures).
10W for 2.6TFLOPS for the M1
75W for 2.138TFLOPS of the 1050Ti
or the newer 1650
75W for 2.984TFLOPS
I'm not a Apple user but if their number is to believe then that pretty impressive.
AnonD-804996, 11 Nov 2020Tflops is not everything. And hasn't been for a while, especially with gaming. It's ... moreNo matter how much optimized the hardware and software combo is, Macs and gaming can't exist together. Just buy a Asus ROG G14 and you can stop worrying about gaming performance on a laptop.
imparanoic, 10 Nov 2020Isn't 2.6tflops a bit weak in performance for 2020, compare to PlayStation 4 pro released... moreWhy comparing 300W usage device and 10W power usage device?
imparanoic, 10 Nov 2020Isn't 2.6tflops a bit weak in performance for 2020, compare to PlayStation 4 pro released... moreTflops is not everything. And hasn't been for a while, especially with gaming. It's all about integration of software and hardware. I remember my old S3 Savage3D 8MB graphic card back in 1998 and how massive performance boost it got in any Unreal games with S3 Metal API compared to Direct3D. I was getting insane performance out of card that was on paper much weaker than RivaTNT2 or Voodoo 3. All these years after and I still remember my shock and amazement of smoothly running UT99 at 1024x768, which was a very high resolution for such card. And it worked beautifully. And that's what Apple is banking on here. They tailored the the M1 subsystem to have seamless communication with everything, CPU, GPU and memory, all as one unit. Where on all PC's and laptops, every subsystem is connected with much slower communication interface. And it's always shuffling data between these components. Apple also runs own graphics API which is much more tightly integrated, just like that S3 Metal API was with S3 graphic card. And that can deliver insane performance boosts. And thanks to Apple owning the hardware and software, they can make sure all the features are used this moment. Where on Windows systems, we get all the cool hardware and then it takes years for software to catch up.
What I'm not so sure about is how far can Apple scale this. One thing is making super efficient chip for mostly laptop like devices. What I'm wondering since day they announced this is if they can scale it so far to replace Intel Xeon 28 core, 56 thread chips in Mac Pro. And replace the brute force of dual Radeon VII graphic cards in it. That will be the real showcase. I'll be amazed if they can pull it off. But for now, I'm gonna wait for reviewers to poke these M1 devices and hopefully compare them to Windows laptops so I can see if their claims actually hold when directly compared and compared to what exactly.
imparanoic, 10 Nov 2020Isn't 2.6tflops a bit weak in performance for 2020, compare to PlayStation 4 pro released... moreAnd how much power do these use for the same performance ?
Ahh. When limited to 10 watts.
This chip sounds like a beast. I hope it does beat Intel/AMD chips and usher in a new era of ARM computing. Seems x86 is on its way out.
Those performance numbers are hella vague.
Seems next ipad pro can run Final cut pro X
imparanoic, 10 Nov 2020Isn't 2.6tflops a bit weak in performance for 2020, compare to PlayStation 4 pro released... moreWe all know apple will upcharge for anything useful for GPU wise. They are only doing this because they want an even more anticonsumer platform to lock out less and less user upgrades.
ali, 10 Nov 2020m1 is revolutionary in the world
imagine you can run mac apps on your phone!!I think it won't be vice versa.
M1 has 50% more transistors than A14
More performance cores
Beefier GPU
All iPhones and iPads apps are gonna be on Mac. But it won't be the either way.
imparanoic, 10 Nov 2020Isn't 2.6tflops a bit weak in performance for 2020, compare to PlayStation 4 pro released... morenice try to compare a ps4 with M1 xd
one is explicitly for gpu-heavy tasks and on is not :D
imparanoic, 10 Nov 2020Isn't 2.6tflops a bit weak in performance for 2020, compare to PlayStation 4 pro released... moreThats pretty weak for todays tech, apple just doesnt got it like intel will always 😂
