Anonymous, 17 Nov 2020but fails to address the important questions: is that Huawei's entire line of mobile phon... moreNo, it's not, just the Honor line which has a weaker ability to generate profit anyway. Honor's 2019 profit was CNY~6B, but valued to fetch USD~40B for Huawei in this deal. ARM was worth USD40B in the sale to Nvidia. If Honor could maintain its current profits(questionable since the smartphone market is already contracting), it would take 42 years for this "consortium of investors"(over 98% of which is actually controlled by the Shenzhen government) to break even, so seeing the numbers anybody could realize that this is more political than economical.
This is yet another move by the CCP to give Huawei another significant infusion, just like last year when Chinese carriers were forced into NSA 5G that was in turn scheduled to be replaced by SA 5G starting next year, which generates huge profits for Huawei yet nothing but huge waste for the carriers and the society in general.
It would be interesting to see how US sanctions adjust to this, because with a little digging one could see that Honor would be officially owned by the government, it gives a chance for the US Department of Commerce to either let this pass or reinstate the sanctions to the "new" entity.
