Jasper5774, 26 Nov 2020Not really China depends heavily on export to meet its GDP targets. US alone imports 1/3rd of... morethe chinese are much more capable of consuming what they produce, than the u.s. would be in producing what they are used to consuming.

and that's not even taking into account the cost at which said production would take place--just productive capacity

productive capacity takes generations to build, and the u.s. doesn't have much (or any) capacity in most industries, certainly not for the level of quality and quantity they're used to

if we add in the cost of labour, regulations, taxes, etc the average american could not even afford to buy t-shirts made in america, let alone high-end phones

There was a big controversy a few years ago where Apple refused to pay their workers in China 2$/day wages instead of 1$/day.
That's how they make the most profit.

Apple is just a Basic B who would rather switch countries instead of paying 1.1 Dollar per Hour / Worker over the current lowest manageable pay point.

It's good that these sort of moves take some of China's bite away from geopolitical fang baring. But this means zero for the end users because their product prices will never actualy go down. But instead they will pull added stunts, ala "saving the environment = No more chargers & earpods hence forth", to keep pushing that corporate greed envelop further and further down our throats. All to pad their profit margins and stock prices, while the faithful happily gobble it up and ask for more.

Oh and the cons from Foxconn can go to hell, regards from WI.

The minimum wage is ~$8/hr, do you think US workers can survive below $8/hr?
Chinese & Vietnamese workers can live for less than $8/hr.

lol the state of California would have to pull a crazy and drop down hourly wages to China levels (this is just still 1 factor among other things; taxes, logistics (US -> Asian regions) etc) THEN they'd consider it. Like maybe in a hundred years at best...

China depends heavily on export to meet its GDP targets. US alone imports 1/3rd of total chinese export. This will change in next 1-2 years and China very well understand it. Even Europe, north and south american countries, India, Japan and many other countries are in the process of reducing chinese imports.
China have also invested very heavily in manufacturing assemblies and reduced imports will cause recession in china. That is why they are trying desperately to promote domestic consumption. It's the best and only strategy left to survive.

Also Few companies leaving china may not hurt them in short term but it is a sign of concern as world has already decided to reduce their dependency on china for import. Biggest beneficiary are and will be Vietnam, Mexico, India, Indonesia and Bangladesh.

It is utmost important for china to meet their GDP targets to bypass US economy otherwise all this muscle flexing and bullying will go to waste and Falling economy will be nothing but a sign of shame.

The reason why they use Chinese Slavve Labor is to keep the selling price low.

Did you see how conveniently they are looking at countries like Vietnam and India.
They know they can get cheap labor from third world countries. That won't be possible in Europe or the US.

Jasper5774, 26 Nov 2020Dragon is loosing it's teeth to tigersDoubt it. Most of these are basic assembly line jobs that are low pay and more importantly represent little value-added to the economy.

As Chinese ODM/OEMs become more dominant, they move up the value chain and part of that process is shedding these low-value jobs. These actions show the economic push by China is working as domestic wages rise and is less competitive vs. other developing countries such as Vietnam and India.

In essence, what you perceive as weakness is actually strength.
