When I selected high performance mode for the first time, I was doubtful if the fingerprint scanner really works or just unlocks with whatever finger. there was that much difference. But unfortunately the smaller battery doesn't allow using it for long.

You have to set the service which runs the fingerprint sensor to run permanently in the power management options :) That makes it enormously faster!

I've tested every iteration of the Samsung phones with under-screen fingerprint sensor, and every single one is equally horrible. It is to the point of unusable unless you are very forgiving.
If you average the unlocking time over 10 successful unlocks -
Note 9 - instant unlock
S8 - instant unlock
One Plus phones - about the same as a S8/Note 9
Huawei P40 - Faster than Note 9/S8
S10/S20 - Slower than typing in pin
