Yes, and they should.
"binning done on software level"
This one is not really feasible as software binning still requires full resolution readout which significantly slows down the sensor scanning speed.

To give you a perspective, in full resolution mode, the effective resolution of 108MP sensor that Samsung uses on S20 Ultra/Note 20 Ultra is actually lower than that of 64MP Tetracell sensor on M51 as shown in the balcony shots from both phones on GSMArena's reviews.

If Nona bayer is the problem than why not just keep the sensor size and reduce to 64MP Quad bayer would give much better results and 64MP would still be enough for 3x lossless zoom or maybe at least 2.5x

Putting a plastic back on a phone is not considered illegal, plus, the plastic they use is made to FEEL like glass, so it won’t make a big difference in the premium feeling.

Let's hope for the best. 2100 Exynos can be better than SD 888.
