Jasson91, 18 Dec 2020Lol no im upgrading my flagship device for once per 2 years and midranger for once per 1 years... moreGreat, so you have money. Congrats I guess... A lot of people use phones for many years and having timely updates going for years, it's more reassuring things still get fixed or improved. Wanna wonder why Android ecosystem is so stupendously fragmented and full of devices that are vulnerable and never ever fixed? Coz people do exactly that. Run old phones with outdated OS. And people run their whole lives from personal data, personal photos, banking, shopping etc on those swiss cheese phones. Yikes.

You said it as if as soon as updates stopped coming, you phone would immediately stop working. Longer support is better, of course, but it is by no means necessary.

There is nothing so expensive about that. It didnt cost more than cheapest iphone available per year. Like what i said im bored with the same device every year plus im not broke like those people who stick with their luxury device for 5 years.🤣
RealLifePhones, 18 Dec 2020As a defense for Samsung: I am a S10 user and I am very happy with the update situation. Updat... moreAgree, samsung is actually fine. The reason why the android ecosystem is bad as a whole is that companies like Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi launch a lot of phones which are very similar but have slight variations and this large useless variety means that the companies don't care about updates. Its obvious, by giving less updates, the phones get outdated faster and so the companies can sell more. Btw, "coughs" LG and motorola suck at updates as well
Meanwhile qualcomm is laughing behind the doors at the fact that they are the reason for slow updates by making too many chips with slight variations.
Qualcomm & Google need to provide tools for technically minded users to bypass OEMs for those 3 upgrades. Project Treble had made that possible.

Updates are monthly, some security patches were delivered before even Pixels got them (I stopped counting after 7), the time until the Android 10 update hit wasn't the fastest but totally acceptable (end of November 2019), I got a lot of new features through OneUI 2.1 & 2.5 updates that add usefulness, I get 3 OS updates, I get a total of 5 years with security updates. Even midrangers get a lot of these benefits but on a quarterly basis.
Samsung is still one of the best Android OEMs when it comes to updates and they have improved a lot in the past 2-3 years people just didn't take notice. https://m.gsmarena.com/nokia_phones_top_counterpoints_trust_rankings_a_mix_of_update_speed_and_hardware_durability-news-45990.php

When bugs are found in iOS, and the OS was patched, but the app refused to be updated, then the fault is with the developer.
Sometimes, it's not just crashes that harms your phone, a badly written code, that keeps backward compatibility, causes lags, instability, battery drain, taxing on the cpu / gpu. Thats why it destroys your trust in the hardware, thinking you need more and more specs.

People who brag about stock ROM being better usually lack experience of using different Android skins (especially skins from 2020).
I run my own shop selling phones from different brands, so I know what I am talking about.
I have used All type of phones as daily driver in the past decade.
About 30-40 phones over a period of time, mostly flagships.
In 2020, I'll rather use one ui, miui, zen ui based Androids over stock OS which lacks latest features and is basically playing catchup.

When bugs are present on iOS, the individual developer is to be blamed.. It's clear how biased you are. BTW iOS Has way more bugs upon launch and they keep fixing it for the rest of the year. People simply don't want to deal with buggy thermal throttling mess called iPhone.
Hanif Fikri, 18 Dec 2020Lol when the softwares in chinese smartphones getting better guess who gonna ban it...OxygenOS and MIUI are already better than stock Android. Google is merely playing catchup to features being introduced by Chinese vendors. Expect Google to fall further behind when Huawei launches HarmonyOS. But, you know, they can always try and ban Chinese phones.

Is that why apps are crashin... moreFragmented OS have no updates. So the latest OS have to be backward compatible to old codes, making your whole experience laggy, and sometimes bugs. These type of bugs will appear for older OS versions, by then.. everyone would have moved on, buy a new android phone. If you still stuck with it.. TUFF luck!.
Apple upgrade their OS, make it more efficient on every iteration. It is up to the developer to adopt the latest changes and make their app "up to par". Those developer who are lazy, blame Apple for bugs, because they are lazy.. do not want to change their code.. too much work. But like all famous OS, developer who are lazy will be cast aside, other more hardworking developers will take their place.
In short, bugs in iOS is handled fast and with urgency. Android.. ha! Just buy a new phone.. they are dirt cheap anyways right?
And if the the carriers choose to only provide support for 1 version of Android then such support by qualcomm is invalid.
Govt ned to legislate that device carriers, manufacturers have to support their services for at least 5 years after purchase and that includes spare parts, firmware upgrades and security updates.
Of course they will not do this, the tax revenues from discarding of phones forcing people to regularly update their devices is too great.

Anonymous, 17 Dec 2020And here I am, having 7 year old phone running Android 11.Custom ROM's just isn't the same. Most of them out there (especially the unofficial builds) simply aren't stable enough for daily drive over time. Being down that road, while it nice to refresh old phones, but there is a point where it simply not good enough.
