Not sure why anyone would want the battery to degrade faster than necessary, especially when it's not replaceable

Apple do not want you to power it down completely as it will not let you search for it if lost. Locating it requires it to hav some sort of power. A zero power is not an option I guess. But that has to be a choice of the user, not Apple's.

Though, it's a great feature. Let say you forgot to press the off button, this feature will save your life.
There Apple, choice is always good. A choice to have jack 3.5, a choice to have microSD, a choice to have more ports on a laptop.
