You have to remember this article is one person's opinion. Phone prices/options vary greatly from region to region; Europe, Asia, even Canada vs. the US has different options/ prices. You cannot compare phones between regions because something like the OnePlus Nord is not available to me in Canada. Yeah, it looks like a great phone on the internet, but useless to me where I live. The Pixel 4a made sense to me. Try finding a decent phone for $479 (Canadian) or less.. you can't find anything that really compares here(If you get a great processor you sacrifice the camera). Plus, people suggesting 5g clearly live in big cities. Where I live (and most of the population in Canada) 5g won't even be available for a few years. So spending extra for a 5g phone, pointless for me personally. So, for me, the 4a is a winner. But then, that's just my opinion.
I know the article doesn't compare different brand, I've just seen comments mentioning different brands.
Should I update my pixel 3a xl to Android 11? Or just stay at Android 10
Anonymous 2, 01 Jan 2021Uh, saying that only people who review loads of phones have the right to an opinion is monopol... moreApparently reading is really hard nowadays. I never said only reviewers have the right I said that people that tested a whole range of phones usually have better unbiased(as much as possible) opinion what phones offer value for the money they are being sold at. Also you are wrong about people who buy with their phones with their own money are the only ones who can give the real metric on how good the phone is. People want to be validated when it comes to their choices so of course they will sign high praise about the phone they bought with their own money. And at the same time they are usually the ones to completely swore of a brand if they get one faulty model. The ''average'' consumer isn't the best reviewer but more if a guide what is popular among the masses.

The previous winners and losers articles made sense, but this one, I would have completely inverted it, just from the reviews and all I've heard about them.
The 4a a loser, just because it was released later in the year? That's a questionable choice, because unlike the old Samsung Note series, the 4a wasn't just a H1 2020 phone with an added stylus.
I don't hear much about the 4a 5G, it somehow got under the radar. I personally like it but it seems niche.
The Pixel 5 has fixed what people didn't like about the Pixel 4. Also, the new pricing strategy has gotten it closer to the Nexus line, but without the bad camera those were known for. And the battery is also much better than its predecessors. It seems like the most well-rounded phone from Google yet.

Due to covid and partly working from home, I went from using a totally fantastic Sony to my Pixel 4a (a spur of the moment upgrade), and yes, the camera is on par with my older Sony, but the 4a voice quality is the worst I've ever had - at a time when I've needed voice more than ever b4.
So, no the price doesn't bother me - but the quality does
(and the Pixel 4a gets hot fast, which is something that never happened with the 2 Sony's or the Samsung I've prev had)

Only someone who has reviewed most of the smartphones on the market can have an opinion if something is worth it's asking price or not. Yeah in the USA makes a lot of sense and it's great value since the competition is nonexistent in that 350$ segment of the market. Now go to Europe or Asia and you see it's around 400€ and then you see what else you can get for around 400€ spoiler alert : much better phones.

Worst Culprit are these @mercian Youtubers who can't stop recommending it.
Even here in India, a few Youtubers recommending Pixel 4a with 730G at high prices over Snapdragon 855 or Snapdragon 865 based flagships.

No matter how clean the UI, how optimized the experience, 730G can't compete with flagship.
People who say Xiaomi are only specs haven't ever used anything beyond their 100$ offerings.
Are planning to do a Winners and Losers article for Lenovo/Motorola, Sony, Vivo and TCL as well?
E.g. for TCL a big loss is no more BlackBerries effective 08.2020 but it would be great to cover the strengths and weaknesses of them launching phones with their own brand.
Vivo is a part of BBK, but you have a lot of coverage for the X series and IQOO so there's bound to be some good material there.
Since Lenovo didn't drop too many new phones in 2020 (With some being Moto clones), it would be a very good point to combine them with Moto.
Sony didn't have much to offer in 2020 and that could be their loss.

I think they'd know if Pixel 4a is better or worse than it's competitors, whether it's the Pixel 4a 5G, Xiaomi phones or otherwise. I personally don't like the high price and weak hardware in Pixel phones.
What were you thinking putting the 4a in a loser's spot? That phone is arguably the best budget android phone in the States. And even outside the states, it's a very lucrative proposition.
To all the people going on about OnePlus Nord: they have only included ONE major android update. ONE. Even my cheapo Nokia 6.1 Plus had two. Stop buying a phone just because the specs are good. Realise the importance of software and updates. This is why a 4GB RAM iPhone outperforms Android flagships.
People who complain about the price of the pixel 4a clearly don't see it's worth stacked up against the competition. Sure a xiaomi phone will be cheaper with the same specs, but damn: I saw plenty of them and they never deliver a great package. Plenty of specs, but something is always lacking. You see they are praised for decent screens? Boom comes generations of blurry and low brightness screens. Same goes for their software and performance.
Im Haq, 01 Jan 2021Stop laying pixel 5 better than all previous Google smartphonesHaving the chipset downgraded from a flagship SD 800 series chipset to an upper-midrange SD 700 series chipset is better? Lol please, it's NOT!
The 4a 5G may have a better spec, but I don't see any reason to buy it right now because there is no fully working 5G network here in Malaysia, so I'd just buy the standard 4a.
