I could have sworn the other night while shooting photos of the Milky Way, the camera switched from Night Site to Astralphotography not Astrophotography. Maybe it was just me.?

The ultra wide angle camera captures more(!) light per frame than the Pixel 3a due to the much longer exposure time, unless the lens suffers from a lot of vignetting.

It makes the whole experience "easier" as you said... but that's certainly not 'better', and certainly not in terms of quality.
Most gcam advantages mentioned can apply to DSLR as well.
Firstly, you can still have variable shutter speed in DSLR as per your button press. Secondly, while you can stop after the lightning in a DSLR, the resultant pic can be edited in RAW, with a wide dynamic range to achieve a good exposure.
Multiimage stacking can also happen on PC.

But yes, I will agree with what you said- its way easier on a cellphone.

AnonD-973296, 02 Jan 2021so that makes an object in the image look like jello?Ya, the object jellos around. But sorry, not in image, in video.
It stretches around the video, like a jello even when video itself looks stationery... EIS itself is a video concept I guess.
Let me admit, my post's point no. 1 of using EIS in photos... could be most certainly wrong.

Big sensor is not a requirement as there is enough exposure time.
Smartphones have the trick of computational photography up their sleeves which makes the whole experience easier than a Dslr/mirrorless cameras.

Right about analogue gain as well.

Can't compare sensors directly on their shutter speeds though, aperture differs, then of course, images created may be different in their approach towards exposure, maybe one is +4 and other is +0.7, who can say. And of course, ISO.

Now the thing is, in wide angle cameras, the corners are 'spread away' compared to the center of the frame.
So, when EIS is used, image is stabilised, but a jello effect happens...

Yes, astrophotography is way better than night mode, but night mode shows a live preview and captures in 10s, not 10 minutes.
Also, the pixel 5 consistently outshines the iPhone 12 lineup in every category? lmao

HUAWEI P30 Pro (fat Google) more than one year old and current P40 Pro (minus Google Services) run circles around any phone on SW quality astrophotography thanks to their unique partnership with Leica. We Canadians can buy both and subscribe to wireless services here.
Speaking of SW photography the P40 Pro, although several degrees narrower, is unquestionably the sharpest and least distorted edge-to-edge camera phone than any brand.

The Xiaomi Note 10 captures three times as much light per time as the latest Pixel phones. So a Pixel phone with the camera hardware of a Xiaomi Note 10 or Xiaomi 10 Ultra would take better 4 minute astro photos. Theoretically the quality could be even better, if the astro mode would take 15 minutes.
Yes, astrophotography always takes time, even when you use a large camera. Then you still have to capture a long exposure or combine dozens of exposures for the best results.

Actually EIS is related to video and on a tripod you don't need OIS anyway. But of course it's possible to align multiple frames. Google is already doing this since at least 2013.

                                  2. Longer exposure time would be surely a solution, but low Iso = low analog gain would be bad. A high analog gain improves the signal to noise ratio of the raw data.

It might have nothing to do with the sensor. Note that the Pixel 5 ultra wide angle camera captures 16s exposures whereas the Pixel 3a only captures 4s exposures. The difference in exposure time is larger than the hardware difference, unless the lens suffers from a lot of vignetting.
