MediaTek is doing great on what they do. But everything has a timing. For now, no phone brand will buy MediaTek SoC if it costs close to Qualcomm SoC. So, why would MediaTek waste resources on high end SoC !

Samsung was part of the custom program not because they paid the price, because they started the program along with Arm.
Secondly, Qualcomm choose Samsung ove TSMC, definitely not for manufacturing capacity of TSMC. As a lot of Kirin SoC order was cancelled TSMC's 5nm node shouldn't be busy.
Sometimes the inside story is very suspicious in tech industry.
There is a reason Samsung used SD SoC in USA. Like that there could be story behind X1 core too.

Anonymous, 19 Jan 2021Dimensity 1000, 1200 and upcoming 2000 are made to be alternative to Snapdragon 8xx, not 7xx .... moreno, for that they have the 7xx and 8xx lines which have the 720, 800U and the MTK 820 is the most powerful processor in the mid-range with the same gpu power as the 845 and the same cpu power as the 855, so It seems that if they "stole" customers from Qualcomm.

Or because you think that 775 is going to have such a significant increase in power, qualcomm is afraid that MTK will beat it in the mid-range as in last year, and this competition is good, it favors us consumers, so no I see reason to screw MTK when his presence just favors us

Other anonymous guy is right. How do you think Samsung and Qualcomm became a part of the program? Of course paying the price. ARM wouldn't refuse Mediatek it they would pay the price. That's simple.

Answer to the question why it didn't pay is cost. Cost of licensing fees and extra manufacturing cost.

Qualcomm probably went to Samsung for two reason. Cost and manufacturing capacity. TSMC probably still is better, but Samsung is cheaper, also TSMC didn't have enough 5nm EUV wafers for both Apple and Qualcomm at the same time.

Qualcomm and Samsung are having bright paths ahead on their CPU and GPU games, respectively, while MediaTek is just here casually making ordinary flagship level SoCs with low prices, but also lacking in availability of drivers for SoCs for software developers to work with them.
Without any bright plans ahead, they won't be able to last for long, and they'll eventually end up being left in the dust again when Qualcomm and Samsung's respective plans come to life by as early as next year.

P C M, 19 Jan 2021Nothing actually.Exactly the main problem here that MediaTek is going to face soon. This minimal performance gap won't last for long, and the headline SoC makers will eventually step up their game by a big shot, leaving MediaTek in the dust if they don't have any table-turning plan to keep up with the competition, nevermind beating them in overall performance.

The probable saving grace for them is if they collaborate with NVIDIA for a Radeon mobile-like graphics exclusive for Dimensity SoCs, but that's very unlikely, given how little their current market share right now is, and a successful GPU OEM like them probably wouldn't waste their resources towards a small company with little profit margins.

As much as I want them to succeed, I don't think they can turn things around with no bright strategies ahead. Heck, they can't even get their SoC drivers available for OEMs, which is literally a basic thing to do for other chipmakers.
At best, they can only match Qualcomm and Exynos' performance, but other aspects leave a lot to be desired.
I really do hope they would surprise us in the end, because it would be disappointing if their long time of being silent about their plans will just end in nothingness.

                              You can't be sure :
                              - Mediatek isn't one yet
                              - or won't be in the future

What we can see is +13°C after a single AnTuTu test on Snapdragon 888 with X1 (MI 11), Mediatek can't afford this unless media's fury!

Qualcomm choses Samsung's for a single reason :
                              - 100% of TSMC's 5nm were used by Apple in 2020Q4
                              - 80% is used in 2021Q1
                              No production means no clients.

If true then its good to habe competition especially in the upper midrange or flagship killer levels.

If I were a Philosopher as you then I must say, only Samsung had the X1 core.
Samsung traded X1 with Qualcomm in exchange for SD 888 being fabricated at Samsung.
Otherwise I don't understand the reason for Qualcomm to choose Samsung 5nm.
                                    TSMC's 5nm is better.
